Sarah Palin did NOT say "I can see Russia from my house."

… [T]here are a lot of stupid people who don't like Palin and have difficulties separating fact from fiction.…

Point?

There are a lot of people, stupid and intelligent, who do like Palin and have difficulties separating fact from fiction.

There are a lot of very intelligent people who decidedly do not like Palin and have no difficulties separating fact from fiction …

That people think Sarah Palin said something about seeing Russia from some place, her home, an island, whatever, really isn't that important to them. That she is a figure of ridicule and totally unprepared to be president; that's what's relevant.

I don't like Palin, she's a spiteful, mean spirited demagogue in my opinion, but I do know that she said you can see Russia from parts of Alaska and that proved according to her, “how small our world is.” What an idiot!

No duh. Everybody knows it was a SNL skit. Its still funny though.

Actually many people don't just as they also think Gore said he "invented" the internet which he did not.

If something is said long enough it's believed as fact by those that want to believe it.

It obviously struck a very responsive chord with the American people.

The lie did, yes... Not Palin's actual statement. The unfortunate fact is, whether it was in jest or stated seriously, many people in the media ran with that lie, which in turn resulted in a whole lot of people looking down upon, or questioning the intelligence of Sarah Palin.

When the country is in the middle of a presidential campaign, with the elections right around the corner, that kind of chit should never take place from our news media. It's absolutely disgraceful, and an embarrassment to our nation.

Yes. Not sure why this is surprising. I just don't understand why people like you and haymarket get so riled up whenever anyone tries to point out that one of the dozens of dumb things that Palin said wasn't actually a Palin original. For some reason, I don't think you'd be so argumentative if I were defending Obama from the people who were taking his 57 state comment out of context or who were asking about his birthplace.

That people think Sarah Palin said something about seeing Russia from some place, her home, an island, whatever, really isn't that important to them. That she is a figure of ridicule and totally unprepared to be president; that's what's relevant.

No, that's what's important to people who can't stop complaining about her.

I'm really at a loss for why you feel the need to keep emphasizing this. Do you think there are people who don't know your thoughts about Palin? Is it cathartic for you to keep talking about how awful she is?

the single most overused word on this website by right wingers is LIE. By your standard, every parody is a LIE. Every imitation is a LIE. Every joke based on a real event that uses exaggeration to make a point is a LIE. When it comes to your own gods who reside upon your altar of worship, many of you have no sense of humor at all.

I thought Darrell Hammond was terrific as Bill Clinton - very funny. Fred Armisen simply does not do a good Obama and thus really falls short of the mark for great parody.

Fair enough. I have of late avoided threads about Palin and Beck because I've said what I have to say about them — my mind's made up. My participation in this thread then was merely to identify for my own sake what Palin did say and as Barbbtx emphasizes, what context she said it in. The rest is a rehash.

Parody =/= lie
If someone repeats that parody as if it were an actual statement and then others claim that that actually happened, then that is a lie.

Pretty straightforward.

And you sit there and pass judgment knowing perfectly that everyone who repeats that joke believes it to be true? Amazing powers you have.

One of the biggest problems in our country is ignorant people and those who prey on them :(

Your reading comprehension needs some work.

Grim: "Many people area spreading a lie about Palin."
You: "Parody isn't the same as a lie."
Me: "If someone is spreading this statement as if it actually happened, then that's a lie."
You: "How do you know that everyone who repeats that joke thinks its true?"

Nobody said that everyone who repeats this tidbit thinks its true. That's a strawman of your own making. The point is that when idiots do claim that she actually said this, they are repeating lies.

Context is good. What do you think it shows?

I think it shows that Charlie Gibson himself commented from Alaska that they were close to Russia.
It shows that Palin had more to say about Russia, before and after the comment that the media used to make her look stupid.
She is more educated on Russia than "I can see Russia from my house" Or Russia can be seen from Alaska" which the media tried to portray as all Palin knew about Russia.

Then she should not have been so idiotic as to say you can see Russia from Alaska and that being close to Russia is good foreign policy experience.

She should have expanded on her foreign policy experience instead

She clearly was not ready for being on the national stage, she did not prepare herself for any interviews,

My reading comprehension is just fine.

Here is what you said

Here is my response to you

I can read your words and I fully comprehend that they only have any relevance at all if you are able to know that people actually do this.

And you don't know that for a fact. You only assume they do so you can attack them for doing it.

She should have expanded on her foreign policy experience instead

She clearly was not ready for being on the national stage, she did not prepare herself for any interviews,

Her statement was in response to this question:

CHARLES GIBSON (ABC NEWS)
(Off-camera) What insight into Russian actions particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of this state give you? GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN (REPUBLICAN VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE)

It was a throwaway quip meant to fill space in an interview. It was not a long-form dissertation on her foreign policy positions.

Well Gee I guess Gibson is a lousy interviewer for also mentioning the proximity of russia to Alaska.

She did expand more. The media ignored that and made a joke out of one truthful comment. In fact if I'm not mistaken, they first ran with it because they thought it was a lie.

JFC.

I someone repeats that parody as if it were an actual statement and then others claim that that actually happened, then that is a lie.

I did not say "everyone who repeats the joke is lying." I said that everyone who repeats the joke as if Palin actually said that is lying.

Get it?

What is amazing is that it is two full years later and this is still a sore spot for those on the right. And then - with a straight face mind you - they tell us that Palin is NOT going to be the nominee in 2012.

Right. ;) Like who else are we spending this much time on either justifying and defending or attacking at this point in time?

Palin is the 500 pound gorilla in the room and anyone who thinks otherwise is just whistling past the graveyard.

Nope. Because you have not cited even a single person who does what you claim is being done. Not one. You are falling back on an argument that you have yet to offer a shred of real world evidence to support.

you want the luxury of attacking people without every having to prove that such people actually exist.

What's amazing is that it's two years later and there are still morons who think that Palin actually said this.

She's not.

It wouldn't have turned into a 50 post thread if people like you didn't throw a fit everytime anyone tries to say that maybe some of the criticism of Palin is overblown.

What's amazing is that it's two years later and there are still morons who think that Palin actually said this.

Al Gore and the internet. It makes perfect sense to me why they still dominate.

from RightnNYC

What's amazing is that it's two years later and there are still morons who think that Palin actually said this.

and you still want to go on the attack and claim this without one shred of evidence that there even exists such a person - moron or otherwise.

So you're saying that I need to prove that there is at least one person on this planet who thinks that Palin actually said that? You're arguing that everyone who repeats this line knows full well that it's a joke?

Remember when I said that I like to correct ignorance wherever I see it? Once again, I'll make an exception for you. Feel free to keep wallowing.

Al Gore and the internet. It makes perfect sense to me why they still dominate.

Don't be foolish, every single person who repeats that knows full well that Gore never said that. There's not a single person on the planet who thinks otherwise!
