Snow topped the mountains near Breckenridge today. (Breckenridge Ski Resort)Goodbye summer. Hello cold rain and snow.

The season's first widespread snowfall is expected to hit the mountains and high valleys today with accumulations of up to 4 inches at elevations above 7,500 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

Drivers and travelers in the high country should expect slushy roads today, especially over mountain passes.

On the Eastern Plains of Colorado, rain and showers will continue through the morning and decrease by the afternoon, the weather service reports.

The Palmer Divide area may see a few snowflakes today, the last day of summer, the weather service said.

Cold, wet weather will likely continue in the mountains through the week, but warmer weather is expected for the weekend.

Denver will see a chance of showers today. The high temperature in the city should be about 52 degrees, the weather service said.

Gardeners beware: Overnight temperatures in Denver will slip into the upper 30s tonight and tomorrow, the weather service warns.

Tomorrow, the first day of fall, Denver will see a 40 percent chance of showers under mostly cloudy skies with a high temperature of 53 degrees, the weather service said.

Colorado's weather is expected to start warming up late in the week, and Denver should be mostly sunny on Friday with a high temperature of 74 degrees, the weather service said.

What do climatologists have to say about this? Not that skepticism isn't healthy, but I tend to trust the experts a bit more on this because many have spent their lives studying the issue.

Anyone have the stats on the temperatures for the last few decades compared to the rest of recorded history? I hear wildly contradictory claims: the left says they are hotter than ever and the right says they are among the coldest ever. Cant find a reliable source.

snow in the co mountains this time of year is hardly rare.

It's been a cold, wet summer here and it looks like we're heading into a cold, wet winter. But global climate trends cannot be discerned from a single data point.

Global warming is not as much as "its getting hotter all over", but that there is very erratic weather conditions randomly around the world that do not follow the normal patterns.

Here is the chart from NASA,although the last few years have been cool (due to El Niño),
the trend is overwhelmingly warmer:

exactly. it's been a hot wet summer here.......

funny how al gore and his merry band of global warming alarmists have now rephrased their mantra to be: climate change (just in case it gets colder instead of hotter).

Well, how dishonest of them for trying to cover-up their mistakes!! If they didn't give the theory a proper name in the beginning, we should just consider their theory wrong! That'll show'em!

Where is global warming? It is in Magical Unicorn Land, of course!

Is the world warming? Most certainly it is. Is it man made? Very doubtful imo. Should we be more eco-friendly? Certainly. Not because of GW but because it is the right thing to do.

There are mountains at the Equator that have snow on them 365 days out of the year. Snow in September in higher altitudes is nothing new.

Also, judging the legitimacy of a theory about Global Temperature trends over the recent years by observing the temperature at one specific place at one specific time does not make good science.
