I think it's great that Obama being a half black man earned his way into the highest office in the land.

Although there will always be individual cases of racism or extremist groups (the KKK or Nation of Islam) most of the main avenues to achievement in the USA are as open and equal as human beings can be. Affirmative action can no longer bee seen as addressing injustice (if inflicting injustice on others to create justice for others ever can be logical or just?) it now is a condescending attitude that African Americans can never make it by their merits and so must be placed into positions other groups might have earned. This sort of nanny social engineering tends to create injustice and racial animosity rather than heal it.

I do not think Obama was any more acceptable to the huge number of white people who voted for him because he was half white (certainly his own biography and rhetoric did not emphasize this, though it did his African heritage) than was the case that he had demonstrated the ability those voters sought in a President. Though it may be the case that some racist liberal white voters voted for him mostly because he is black to prove how tolerant they were, or black voters voted for him simply to see one of their own in the Whitehouse, which is in of itself a racist sentiment, not judging solely on the content of character.

Considering that the OP quoted a guy who said "Fifty years from now, there won’t even be any white people!" and we were talking about the idea of racial assimilation, I guess it was just crazy of me to assume that you were referring to a more determinate end date than "ever."

Well I do not agree with the 50 year number.

I think something like 500 years is more like it..if the sun doesn't engulf us by then.

Some did, yes.

Slavery was never a racial phenomenon, always an economic and sociological one. Racism particularly in the south was a secondary phenomenon to pressures applied to the institution of slavery.

I for one voted for the content of his character, the quality of his moral character and his obvious desires to take the country in a much needed new direction in several aspects. The other things were just a plus. I think it is fantastic that the "white barrier" was broken and a person of color was voted into the whitehouse.

By the way those were the same reasons I did not vote for McCain/Palin..the quality of their character. Both moral and political.

Very good, so there was no need to award him affirmative action delegates because he was black, (and of course none were) and subsequently because he had to win the Presidency on a level playing field (with the exception of the press falling in love with him, which I regard as his acheivement too) his achievement is not generally regarded as suspect.

See how equality really works?

You really seem to be implying that if he was all white he wouldn't have stood a chance.

Show me where I was prasing his skin color?

Please tell my why you find it so nauseating that a person of color finally won the Whitehouse?

You seem too really want people to defend this one aspect of the reality of this mans acheivments. Do you feel that he acheived what he did because of his skin color?

What about all of the previous presidents...did they acheive what they did because of their skin color?
