Secessionists formally launch quest for California's independence - LA Times

Supporters of a plan for California to secede from the union took their first formal step Monday morning, submitting a proposed ballot measure to the state attorney general’s office in the hopes of a statewide vote as soon as 2018.

Marcus Ruiz Evans, the vice president and co-founder of Yes California, said his group had been planning to wait for a later election, but the presidential election of Donald Trump sped up the timeline.
“We’re doing it now because of all of the overwhelming attention,” Evans said.
The Yes California group has been around for more than two years, Evans said. It is based around California taxpayers paying more money to the federal government than the state receives in spending, that Californians are culturally different from the rest of the country, and that national media and organizations routinely criticize Californians for being out of step with the rest of the U.S.
Calexit, a promise Trump never made; but he's the cause and should take credit for making America great again. I'll bet Mexico is dancing in the streets, thinking they're going to get California back. Here's my plan. We let them secede, then we recapture them with the military.....just like Abe Lincoln in the Civil War. Then we break them up into about four states (as punishment for leaving ;)), and the liberals lose elections forever. I think it'll work.

Sure, break California up into 4 states. Then combined they get 8 senators instead of 2, and at least 61 electoral votes instead of 55.<FACEPALM>

Not everyone in California is liberal, too many conservatives have no voice in that state. Your :doh didn't work. I'm disappointed.

This would be entertaining. If CA secedes the Democrats will NEVER win another national election. The Republicans, recognizing this fact, may well give them all kinds of support.

Mithro may have a point, may have to adjust our evil plan.

I'm pretty sure that if the secede then they get zero votes regarding anything that goes on in the remaining 49 states.

Why is this "breaking news"?

This is an old article.

The 'Calexit' movement is just as dumb as the ones that want Texas to secede from the Union.

Secession isn't gonna happen.

Everyone in California has a voice through their elected representatives.

Trump is the cause for a group that formed 3 and a half years ago? You Trumpeters are silly sometimes. What next, Trump should take credit for winning the American Revolution? Even your breaking news story is old, from November.

NAh, the answer is like this, President Trump tells California if you secede here's what you face:

All Residents of California are barred for 20 years from entry into the USA, to prevent further treason.
A 40% import/export Tariff to all goods going from the USA into California
A 40% Tariff on all goods from companies or countries that do business with California
All land and business ownership held by California residents outside the land of California will be seized by the US Government.
Travel to California by US Residents will be highly restricted and subject to visa overviews.

Why go to shooting when you can shoot them economically?

Well two big problems, one it is illegal to secede, and two I imagine 99% of Californians do not want to.

Hey, there's an idea, with movie rights! :D

Fourteen east coast states and three west coast states..........nah

God this is comical. How exactly are you planning on gerrymandering California so that conservatives can magically win in some part of the state? You can't form states without cities.. Well you can, but then we'd just have another red state sucking off the teat of the federal government.

California has 12% of the US population and accounts for 15% our countries GDP. (ie they're producing 25% more than the US mean) You badmouth California because they don't vote Republican. Newsflash, places that don't vote Republican are successful, places that vote Republican are not.

Disagree? Trump won the vast majority (84%) of counties. But those counties only account for 36% of our GDP. Conservative ideas simply don't produce. Do the math, blue counties have a GDP that's on average 2.3 times that of red counties.

LA is a ****hole full of Hollywood rable and crime. You want people to believe that Republicans aren't successful. Then explain the complaint that they are the big corporation boogeymen that buy off the government. Dude, you are confused.

So in 2014 24% of Californians wanted to secede. Right now it is 32%.

I agree it sounds ridiculous and unlikely. But ridiculous and unlikely things have happened before. And recently.

They don't appear to have the numbers right now and I doubt simply having Trump as President will do it. But if enough laws change they don't like it might go up. Roe vs Wade? SSM getting overturned? If the Feds ignore their referendum and start busting people for pot? Those things probably won't happen but they are possible. Things like that could push them over.

Usually I would say even if they had the numbers it wouldn't matter. The Federal government wouldn't allow it. But Luther makes a good point. What incentive would the Republican controlled Congress have for stopping it? Such a thing would increase Republican power and decrease Democratic power.

I give it about the same odds of happening as I gave Trump of becoming President when he first announced his intention to run. :)

California would turn into Columbia in a month. LOL

California isn't going to secede because it is planning all us U.S. taxpayers to bail their arses out of their unfunded pension liabilities. The combined debt of California’s state and local governments is at least $848 billion and could escalate past $1.1 trillion, according to the latest reports.

The important question is, if California secedes will they build a wall to keep Arizonans out?

Is it legal to exit? It seem a legitimate political opinion to want to exit. But would it require only a referendum in California ?

No problem, Vesper. They will be their own country and can print as much of their own money as they like.

No idea what you are referring to, California is one state and each citizens of that state has a voice through their elected representative.
