Putin's brilliant proposal

I agree with this. Cigarettes are deadly. Time for the FDA to do something worthwhile.

That's astonishing. For a country with a history so rich in Socialism, you'd think they'd be doing much better.

Hey, do you think that maybe the collapsing birthrate among Russians also has something to do with there being fewer people around?

I am not going to get into whether it was the chicken or the egg. :2razz:
Amazingly, Putin's rule is even worse than under the USSR. Putin and his oligarcs have bled the motherland dry and have become insanely rich in the process. That's the attraction for Trump , he may just use women for pleasure but he adores huge piles of money. It is his real weakness and ultimately will likely be his downfall. I just hope he doesn't take us all down with him.

So, should we legalize cocaine? Heroine?

Sure. So long as it's something they are doing to their own body and not doing any other crime.

You want the government to tell you whether you can smoke or not? Why not, I guess, you already support prohibition of things you disapprove of.
Damn, I deplore conservativism.

Putin is the leader of Russia not America. And if he's doing what he thinks is best for his country than good for him.

Also, there is a direct inverse correlation with the cost of cigarettes and their use. Price goes up, use goes down. This is good for everyone except the tobacco industry.

Here we agree. "Sin" taxes are an important part of the current policy that is already working to reduce tobacco use.

I'm not necessarily opposed to increases to them to defray medical costs, though in some places the revenue doesn't get spent to defray medical costs.

You know what else is deadly? Alcohol.

Because it's not a chicken-egg relationship. When you have a birthrate that is lower than the replacement rate, your population shrinks.

It's what you call "math".

RE: Cocaine, heroine:
Yes. Legalize all of it.

The problem is that these aren't just things people do to their own bodies. When they are gorked out of their minds, they commit crimes to keep getting their fix. At best, they stop being productive members of society. They become a burden and an embarrassment to their parents, rather than helping take care of them. They become aloof or even abusive to their spouse and kids. They become a problem and liability at work. They end up homeless on the streets and someone has to do something about it. And they get sick, and as a society we feel some sense of guilt to not let them just die like feral dogs on the streets, so it becomes an expense to us all. They end up in the endless rotating door of rehab, with society ultimately paying the tab.

You often cannot separate the boundary between the individual and society that clearly.

The negative effects of drug use are nearly 100% caused by their prohibition.

I don't care what they do with tobacco, but banning it will never happen. There is too much tax money in it for politicians to ban.

Yeah. I have heard it called "the stupidity tax".

Bans dont work very well.

The best thing they can do is allow people to smoke and also allow insurance providers to deny coverage to smokers and allow them to refuse to pay for health care expenses related to smoking. Let people be big boys and girls. You want to smoke...fine. By my guest. Nothing but love for you. Seriously. But if you develop COPD or cancer or some other smoking related illness...well...bye.
