Why did an autocrat win the Presidency? This seems to me the abiding question as Trump’s inauguration draws near. He was “the lesser of two evils”, went a popular pre-election argument.
Was he? Trump was the bigger liar, the lesser informed, the least issue oriented toward ordinary voters as between himself and Hillary. His not so secret weapon was, and is, his obvious autocratic leanings. He ran an autocratic business enterprise for decades. His television fame was as an autocrat, hiring and “firing” the hopefuls who put their futures at his mercy before national audiences. No wonder Trump admires Putin and probably envies him, un-shackled by a Congress and a Supreme Court like what awaits a Trump administration.

Trump won the election because many Americans have given up on democracy. These are Americans who want an autocrat. Trump didn’t fool his voters. He wooed them, enough of them to make the difference. He wooed them with a call to autocratic rule. So now when Trump says he won an historically close election in a landslide, they agree against the clearest of evidence that it was a landslide. When Trump praises Putin, many suddenly fund Putin worthy of praise. The mainstream press is on to Trump, more or less, and that means Trump’s sycophantic followers don’t believe and don’t like the mainstream press. It’s a good question whether these people even still like the First Amendment if they ever consciously did.

We are entering a dangerous time for democracy in the United States.

Personally, I think Hillary was by far the lesser of the two evils, a person with much better temperament, more experience, better education and a complete understanding of how the game is played. But, she was not someone I personally felt comfortable voting for due to her inclination to lie, dodge and bring with her a bunch of crooks who know a little too well how to take advantage of government for personal gain. So...for me, the choice was simply not to vote in the General once the Primary season came to an end.

I understand why people voted for Hillary. I do not understand why anyone voted for Trump. But, I will definitely be trying to glean that information as time goes on.

Okay, you are overreacting a bit too much there. Democracy is going to be fine.

I haven't seen any Trump supporters advocating for an autocracy. Nor was that the reason why they voted for Trump.

If anything the reason they voted Trump was mainly because they disliked Clinton, or wanted to make a statement against the political estabishment.

And it's not like Trump is an all-powerful God or anything. He's still going to have limitations on what he can do, thanks to our system of Checks & Balances.

And I don't see how Trump supporters believing something that is false, or being against the MSM somehow means they somehow don't like the First Amendment. That doesn't make any sense to me.

This kind of political philosophy is what lead to you people having your butts handed to you over the last few years on the local, state, and federal levels.

Please, keep it up.

I blame stupidity and low information voters for Trump's election win.

Actually we left a dangerous time in the USA with the departure of Obama ! So was the 1042 seats lost a " lesser of two evils " ? Was control of the Senate and House a lesser of two evils also ? How will libs deal with the 100 federal judges Trump will appoint ?

I'd agree if the Republicans had not elected a corrupt, lying buffoon who is in Putin's hip pocket.

Russia does have a legislative branch, a constitution, as well as judicial system. Actually Russia is a democratic government in the same respects as our own by the fact that the president is elected. It seems pretty complicated to me but I have not studied it extensively. From what I gather it is a representative government with a constitution like our own but different. But that is to be expected very few if any countries have identical governments. Which makes sense is appropriate since no 2 countries are identical.

All I can say about democracy is I am glad we are not a democracy but a representative government that protects the rights of the individual with a constitution and separation of powers.

The part I highlighted stands out as being flat out wrong.

How could anyone objectively say that Hillary ran an issues based campaign? The primary issues voters were concerned with this time around were the economy, terrorism, and immigration. Trump had firm positions on all of them. They may have been controversial but he did make his case.

Hillary, on the other hand, ran as the third term of Obama, "it's my turn", "I'm a woman", and "Trump is bad". Her positions on issues almost seemed like an afterthought.

The whole of the party of corruption cannot decide whether to sh*t or go blind right now.

Control of the Senate , the House , and the presidency a trifecta !!!

Was he?

No. Trump isn't the lesser of two evils and he is manifestation of global rising of populism, both on right and left wing (Sanders is left-wing populist). Reason for this lies in economic crisis from 2008. which has affected most people around the world, which mean Mexicans, muslims and other imigrants who come to West countries because they lost their jobs and want find better life in West. This is than have effect on population in West countries like USA, UK and rest of EU. Because of this we see rise of populist like Trump, Sanders, Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson, Corbin, La Pen, Orban in Hungary, Erdogan in Turkey etc. All of them talk about ''will of people'' and none talk about rule of law, rule of rights and freedoms and rule of knowledge.

Democracy has that bad side called populism.

I'd agree if the Republicans had not elected a corrupt, lying buffoon who is in Putin's hip pocket.

It must be time for safe zones , coloring books , and a break from testing . Winning is great !

Lying, dodging, and consorting with crooks is how the game is played. Hillary just wasn't as good at it as Trump, despite his lack of political experience.

and the OP explains quite well one reason why people voted for Trump. The other was that they're tired of all of the "political correctness", meaning giving minorities the same rights as the rest of us.

Hail Trump! No more black presidents! Send the Mexicans home!

Control of the Senate , the House , and the presidency a trifecta !!!

Republicans had the trifecta during the Bush Administration as well, and what did they do with it? This time around, they got the White House by running a retreaded Democrat. So, are Republicans really in charge? Trump wasn't accepted by many of the party elite until it became clear that he had won.

Trump won the election because many Americans have given up on democracy.

He won the election because he excited his supporters more than Clintons excited hers, conservatives were more motivated by their dislike for Clinton's policies than liberals were for Trumps, and because he provided middle ground non-political types an apparent alternative to "the norm" while Clinton embodied "the norm" as it relates to politics.

That's why he won.

We have been in a dangerous time for democracy since Bush left office and his predecessor was no laugh either, though, he wasn't the man to grab power. Nor is his wife, I suspect.

But you are right that Trump was not necessarily the lesser evil. He will bear watching closely.

Democracy is dead.

The United States in not a democracy and never has been. It is a Constitutional Republic, with a constitution, not the voice of the people, as the supreme law of the land.

Fortunately for us, after having been misled by a conman and fraud, we are still protected by the Constitution and its limits on the powers of the executive branch.

Were it a true democracy, then Hillary Clinton would be the president, having received a majority of the vote. Were it not for the Constitution, she'd have the sort of power that so many attribute to the presidency, but that it does not have.

And, that would be even worse than having been taken in by a conman.
