I come from Russia. Russian patriotism is very strong. It has three components: Orthodox Christian Religion, Russian nationalism, and the memory The Great Patriotic War. I am Jewish -- and Jewish sense of identity is also connected to Judaism, Jewish ethnicity, and memory of Holocaust.

USA contains people of many ethnic and religious backgrounds. America has never been in a severe war with a foreign state.

Is there such thing as American nationalism? Moreover, is there such thing as American nation?

America's independence came from a severe war with the foreign power of the English Empire when the American Colonies declared their independence from England. Many would say World War I and II were also significant wars that America was involved in.

There is such a thing an American patriotism and nationalism, although it may look different than how Russians may display their patriotism.

Of course the United States of America is a sovereign nation in its own right, it's a Federal Republic composed of 50 states.

It is an order of magnitude weaker. Also, many Americans identify primarily with other nations. I am a Jew. African Americans have little to thank USA for.

I'm not sure it's "weaker." Many of us feel very patriotic and celebrate our country on national holidays, especially on July 4th. Many Americans are also very proud of their country and what it has achieved. America's history is very different from Russia's. America is a nation of immigrants where the vast majority of people groups living in the US came from all over the world (Europe, Africa, Asia, etc). We identify as Americans while also having our individual cultures and values, it's what makes the country a melting pot of peoples. Personally, I do wish that we would integrate more and identify as "Americans" instead of by our historic origins.

World War Two doesn't count? World War One doesn't count? Vietnam? The Civil War? The Revolution?

Seems to me you don't know what a "severe war" is.

These two things don't have anything to do with each other.

Also, Americans have proven on a multitude of occasions they identify as Americans more than they do as a "fill in the blank" so.....

I believe that many people with different origins can not primarily identify as Americans. Most Orthodox Jews, Orthodox Christians, Catholics, African Americans, Native Americans would not. I am a Conservadox Jew.

To a large degree Korea and Vietnam are a shame of USA -- as about 2 million civilians were killed by US forces in the two wars.

Many hippies were very much against these wars.

Neither Korea nor Vietnam was a shame; and coming from a country which historically has given exactly zero ****s about civillian casualties it's a little hypocritical to say that.

Civillians die in every war. Far more would have died if the North Koreans had taken over all of Korea. The North Vietnamese also butchered plenty of civvies.

Hippies are irrelevant.

Try again.

You come from Russia...yet you seem to think you can tell us here in the USA about our "patriotism?"

After about how many years living here, and how much of this country you have visited?

We display our patriotism in the exercise of our Constitutional liberties.

We vote, we protest, we engage in conflict and compromise. However, when it comes to a belief in the inherent value of our unified society we are strong firm believers.

Not blind patriotism, but informed patriotism.

Wouldn't know about Orthodox Jews, but I know people who are Orthodox Christians, Catholic, African American and Native Americans; all of them identify as Americans.

To some extent. All of us identify as people from Earth.

America is for everyone. America belongs to everyone.

We are a fractious lot. Moreso in recent decades than before.

But many have made the mistake before of thinking us so divided and contentious that we are weak.

We are not.

Threaten our homeland... watch us stand as one, and fight to the death, and die with blood on our teeth and enemies piled at our feet.

Admiral Yamamoto knew this. The Mexican government knew it (Zimmer telegram).

Wolves may snap and snarl among themselves, but walk into the pack as an outsider and kick the smallest wolf... and see what happens.

America is for everyone. America belongs to everyone.

This post doesn't make any sense in the context of this discussion.

You said you didn't believe those people could identify as Americans. I pointed out my firsthand knowledge of the fact that they do. You just now made a statement which would kill that everyone can indentify as an America--- rather the opposite of what your initial premise was.

I do not know. America in many ways belongs to all people from Earth.

Russia, for instance is connected to Russian culture including Christian Orthodoxy. USA is suppose to be a place for all cultures.

This is one of the more bizarre threads of recent days.

America has never been in a severe war?

America belongs to all people of the Earth?

None of this makes sense.

I do. Attack us as a nation and the differences will fall away very quickly.

I do not know. During Vietnam War, most American hippys saw themselves as humans first -- thus they protested US actions which cost civilian lives.

Vietnam did not involve an attack on our nation.
