The Incredible Shrinking U.S. Government - The Atlantic

Using graph scales that make a 1% change in only personnel counts look huge is nifty. Most of that "huge" difference is not at the federal level and the cost of government is a better yardstick of government growth/shrinkage than how many paychecks it took to reach that cost. BTW, much of that is from retirement at the top - resulting in promotions that raised personnel costs.

close to 600,000 government jobs gone and all you got is obfuscation.

In France.

Tells you how much government is unnecessary.

No doubt we could cut more from our bloated 2.8 million large (not uniformed) bureaucracy.

Remind Trump of that when he takes office as it should do wonders for the unemployment rate and his effort to save American jobs.

If I were made President for a day my only EO would require each and every department head to reduce expenses by 20% without cutting services. If a head declined and said it was impossible, then they would be the first cut.

If I could get it done (doubtful), I would push for a bill requiring each new bill submitted to also name two to be abolished and a full explanation as to how this new bill is to be funded.

Government isn't a very efficient or effective jobs program.

It is hard to tell how many should be cut, but the number is a function of the policy mix pursued. If education or health are private, you need fewer public employees. The same for means tested social programs vs. guaranteed minimum income. They have totally different implications for employment.

I do wonder how many civil servants will vote for a candidate promising to decimate them. It seems quite a good sales point.

I think the first cuts need to be to elected officials retirement funds. They should get SS that is it. Their medical should be paid out of their salary which should not exceed that of the average tax payer. Running for office should be a service to your country not a get rich scheme.

I think elected officials should get paid well. I don't want the job to be attractive only to those who are rich enough not to need money. I'd like for it to be attractive to any old joe-blow so that they could live off of it and not need a second job which would potentially cause conflicts of interests.

These are worthless jobs. I bet we could halve the bureaucracy and notice not one iota of difference.

The folks should go find something productive to do.

Axed, huh. I won't be seeking a civil service job, then. When they say "termination", they mean it.

And you would cause a huge economic slide by doing the irresponsible actions you advocate. That would be just great for the Trump first year.

Here come some of the biggest strikes that France has ever had...

Most of those are local and state... mostly run by... Republicans.

How many are "most"? Could you substantiate that in any way? Not that it would make any difference, which party is responsible with regard their economic viability. But I would be interested in the information.

https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/data-analysis-documentation/federal-employment-reports/historical-tables/total-government-employment-since-1962/

The total FEDERAL, aka under the jurisdiction of the US government aka the US president and Congress is about 4.2 million. Of that 1.5ish is the military, which leaves about 2.6ish that are actual non uniform Federal employees. Regardless that means, that 17 million or so of the 21 million stated are in fact state or local employees in most GOP run places in the US.. as so many GOPers have gloated about on these boards since the election.

The page was not found, but thank you anyway.

Sorrily that leaves the 'mostly GOP' thing unanswered. But it doesn't change the fundamentals nor the power of the Presidency to make a large portion of public employees redundant.

was an extra _ too much at the end, my bad.

As for the GOP reference.. go check who runs the freaking states... what is it now, 30 states or so run by the GOP?

The President cant fire many, since it is Congress that does that, as they set the budgets. But it is far from the 21 million they can influence... they can only influence 4.2 million.

Ahh, yes. Those numbers. I had thought those numbers quite interesting too. Thank you.

As to the firing thing you are quite right. The President cannot fire State and municipal employees. That is not, what I had proposed. What he can do is propose legislation that would make the jobs redundant and get it passed. Then the process would take its course.
