Some nut argues in the Washington Post that it's now time to get rid of states (because if states cause you to lose the election, then it's time to get rid of them?) :doh

A federation of states was a wonderful idea in the late 18th century, but represents an unnecessary and costly burden in the early 21st. Two layers of government — federal and local — offers a cleaner, more sensible and much more affordable system than our current one, a notion not unlike cutting out the middle layer of an overly bureaucratic, inefficient company. Eliminating this middle layer would save the American people billions of dollars a year, the kind of money that could go a long way toward paying down our national debt or preparing for our looming crises in Social Security and health care.

And just remember, if the Left loses the next election, then it'll suddenly be proclaimed that it's time to get rid of voting altogether.

Another strange idea thought up by someone that thinks they are "enlightened".

The Washington Compost realizes its relevance will be much diminished in the next four years Its the railing of an impotent entity

I like the name "Washington Compost". Can I borrow that with credit?

Eight years, next eight years.

I remember being in meetings where some want to be brilliant disillusionist would suggest off the wall ideas. We would waste good time talking them out of their idiotic idea. They usually wouldn't see the light and had to be told, just forget it, ain't gonna happen. I finally got to the point where I would spend three minutes in discussion and get to the "forget it" stage.

I've lived in 13 States over the course of my life so far, and visited a number of others.

IMO the idea that States have lost their purpose because we have become homogenized is ridiculous.

We share certain things; a common language (so far anyway), form of government, and certain ideals and ways of thinking that help bind us together as a united nation.

But there are many local differences of goals, ideals, and aspirations, and this is clearly demonstrated when candidates campaign in each State. They would not bother to discover this via such campaigning without the existence of the Electoral College.

I agree that the Op-Ed writer is just positing another whiny attempt to circumvent an electoral system that has worked to keep our country united for nearly 300 years.

sure-go for it

States will be around for a long time. They're not going away anytime soon.

It's honestly like you people have no idea how newspapers work.

This is a contributed article as part of an ongoing series on theories, political and otherwise. So now, apparently, the WaPo thinks we should get rid of states.

Read the intro to the piece, for crying out loud.

If the editor's let it run, they are showing support for the idea. Isn't that how it works with the Alt-Right and Trump?

And don't forget - for the next 8 years, the New York Times will sound like the New York End-Times, because for them each day some new sky will be falling.

The alt-left is by definition an authoritarian complex. Now that attempts to control dialogue and narrative which paints anyone who disagrees with approved thoughts, value and mores has failed in the most massive way possible, they will push a narrative that consolidates power. This will ultimately be under the guise of protectionist mommy government, who Is needed to protect the "vulnerable".

This meltdown of Liberalism is fun to watch.

They lost to Obama in the last 2 elections, but nobody was rioting in the streets, or holding cry-ins, or writing Op-Ed pieces in WaPo or NYT about the need to change the constitution.

This is why Fascism is exclusively the province of the Left. They're the goose-stepping collectivist groupthinkers. Right-wingers are more naturally and organically individualistic, and they don't foment mob hysteria, whether over losing an election or whatever.

Another click bait, contributed article, based on theory.

Just look at the electoral map, and again tell me that there isn't a cultural difference?

Wipe out the electoral college?

Let the people from a handful of heavily populated geographic regions determine how the rest of us all live?

Lawrence R. Samuel is bing full of himself, or just plain ignorant of the cultural difference of the regions.

Don-t forget about license plates.

Can you imagine every car in the country using the same federal USA license plate?

Funnily enough your answer was already given 8 years ago. Or did you forget that the Left has a sitting President right this very moment? And the first two years of his Presidency the left also controlled both the Senate and House.

"Better days are coming." ~ But not for today's out of touch, running out of time,GOP.

Funny. You have been saying this for what? 3 years now? Looks to me like the GOP is proving you wrong. They managed to take the WH and keep control of both the Senate and the House for how many years now?

The right didn't champion their young idiots blocking highways like the left is now.

The right didn't call for the abolishment of the electoral college like the left is doing now.

The right didn't have to resort to comfort puppies, counselors, and hot coco.............LMAO

God help us all if we ever have to draft these little azzholes in the time of a national emergency.

"The right" (since we're speaking in generalities here) burned Obummer in effigy and held their little tricorner-hat festivals to protest the Kenyan Usurper, so let's not act all innocent here.

Jesus Christ. "The left" is not calling for the abolition of the EC.

Give me a break - show me what was comparable to the scale of the nuttiness we're seeing now from the Left. And these people were the ones demanding Trump accept the results of the election. How come the same question wasn't asked of them?
