Well that was fun. I guess Trump saw something shiny somewhere.

Trump back-pedaled on his promise to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Hillary Clinton over her emails. “I’m going to think about it,” Trump said.

“. . . She did some bad things, I mean she did some bad things,” Trump said, prompting Stahl to ask, “I know, but a special prosecutor? You think you might . . .

To which Trump replied, making a reference to Bill and Hillary Clinton, “I don’t want to hurt them, I don’t want to hurt them. They’re, they’re good people. I don’t want to hurt them. And I will give you a very, very good and definitive answer the next time we do 60 Minutes together.”

Trump supporters made the chant “Lock her up” a standard at his rallies and at the GOP convention in Cleveland.

Sweet: Trump backs off promise of special prosecutor for Clinton | Chicago Sun-Times

He was never going to do that. It was all bluff, just for the cheers from his steeples.

Come January 20 I wonder if there will anything left of the platform his most ardent supporters elected him on. Well, except being a super crappy president, that is. They'll almost certainly get that wish.

Now all the rubes and suckers who actually believed and chanted "jail the bitch" will don the collective blinders and soldier on like it was all in good fun.

The ****'s your point?!
Relief and schadenfreude are by no means mutually exclusive.

Oh, boy. Someone else who can't just disagree with a point; they have to pretend not to understand it.

While at the same time imagining there was some kind of "whew! I'm glad we were wrong about him" here. There wasn't.

If Trump were loudly proclaiming that he would prosecute Clinton then Obama would have an incentive to pardon her. By saying he's backing off on it, it allows Obama to let it pass. I fully expect there to be a special prosecutor because Trump can claim "THE FBI HAD INFORMATION THEY DIDN'T TELL PEOPLE ABOUT". WE MUST PROSECUTE UNDER THIS NEW INFORMATION.

It would take a rube or a sucker to think that woman did not violate section 793(f), which is part of the Espionage Act. The actions by her which Mr. Comey listed in his July statement fulfill all the requirements for a violation of that statute. No sooner had he in effect acknowledged that violation, though, than he asserted--with no attempt whatever to explain why--that it would not be reasonable to prosecute her for it.

If this damned liar is not prosecuted for this felony, it will establish that high government officials may violate the Espionage Act--a serious felony--without fear of the consequences. Doing that risks our defense secrets unnecessarily.

Remember that when you said there was no chance he would win. As far as Clinton, I would force Obama to pardon her. It is just as good as an admission of guilt.

I just had lunch today at a diner lunch-counter, unknowingly sat next to an avid Trump supporter, and as our discussion went along it almost went sideways - to the point the guy started marginally causing a scene, and left in anger. Apparently he's a regular here (as I'm a semi-regular), and the girls waitressing had to humor him and didn't seem surprised at all of his behaviour.

After today's relatively harsh incident, and milder responses from my neighbor (who I like), and two recent other's in the general public and among family & friends, I've come to some conclusions:

In my sample base (maybe 8-10), about half of the Trump supporters are filled with extreme frustration & anger, to the point they care little about what their candidate says or does. He gave them a voice, and that's all that matters. To this subset, he could indeed come pretty close to shooting someone on 5th Ave, and they'd still love him. Trump knows his base well.

Also from my personal sample, there's maybe half or less who claim they don't like what Trump says - but claim they are willing to hold their noses on his stench in order to achieve their political goals. I have no idea if this half is truthful, or putting-up a front.

I can't speak to the percentage breakdown of these two groups, except to say I always assumed the former group was small and the latter group was predominate. I'd still like to hope this is the distribution.

But it seems clear Trump has some subset of supporters who feel so disenfranchised, and are so consumed with anger, that they care not at all what trump says or does; as long as they feel he represents them!

I'm glad today's experience took place in a diner, rather than a bar. But it still was pretty embarrassing, and not just to the other patrons, but to the Mexican kitchen and buss staff looking on through the open kitchen! And yeah, this guy made a big deal about them being "rapists and murderers", and loud enough for everyone - including the kitchen staff - to hear. The guy appeared sober, too.

After I later left, I briefly considered being more careful about starting political conversations with strangers. But then I decided - **** it! If a guy can't present a rational calm argument in support of his thoughts - screw him! That's his problem, not mine!

So, whatever.

"They're good people."

You think that will even register with Trump's voters?

I did make the mistake of starting a political discussion with someone IRL, and like your experience it went south pretty fast. There are several brands of Trump supporters as I understand them, and as you'll see some of my own observations will be parallel to your own. Note: these motivations will mix and match. No single supporter should be expected to fit all the motivations.

1)People who are disenfranchised, have seen their communities' economies implode and have been given no sign that any help is on the way. Trump has given them the impression that he hears them in a way that few other politicians have, and they believe he has a shot. I believe many in this group would have voted for Bernie Sanders. That the Democrats eschewed him in favor of a candidate who was so dispassionate on the topic of rural economic hopelessness will go down as one of the greatest blunders of the Democratic Party in history.
2)Like 1), except these people don't actually believe anything will or can be done, are full cognizant that Trump is unstable and are happy to "turn him into a missile and aim him at Washington." If American superiority were to collapse utterly under Trump this group will have achieved its purpose. Unsurprisingly, I do not feel much sympathy for this group.
3)This is the infamous "basket of deplorables." Nationalists, racists, bigots, xenophobes, isolationists, misogynists, these are the worst the nation has to offer and the Trump movement is a place they can all call home. You could show them a video of Trump raping a chicken and they'd cheer him on, because at the end of the day they see him as their path out of the shadows and into the mainstream.
4)This group does not like Clinton very much, to put it in as understated a manner as possible. The country could end four years down the road in nuclear fallout and mass cannibalism and they'd still say, "Welp, at least Clinton didn't win." Incidentally, this is the group the person I talked to fits in. She was accepting of the notion that Trump a disaster in the making, but then she thought "Clinton," the safety valves were off and she lost her goddamn mind. She started screaming about emails and that's where I had to end the discussion, reminded of why it was my policy never to discuss politics IRL.

What would actually lead any of these groups to be disappointed in Trump? Group 1 will be disappointed when it fully catches on that Trump's entire anti-establishment job-bringing rhetoric was all a gimmick. That will force them almost immediately into group 2, who would be disappointed if Trump doesn't even manage to cause any significant damage along the way. Group 3 won't be disappointed by anything because, truth to tell, the idea that an internet troll made human like Trump could actually bring white supremacy to America was always a fool's hope to begin with. As for group 4 it should be understood that in their most utopian fantasy Clinton is chained to a boulder and made to endure unspeakable torment as a giant eagle consumes her liver every day for all eternity, because, and this can't be said enough, they really, really hate her. That she would simply retire peacefully from politics after losing the election and wouldn't even face indictment may be the thing that finally makes them go completely insane. I mean, more insane than they already are.

I can't disagree.

It sure looks like us non-supporters got them all figured-out, eh? ;)

You should probably inquire at the diner to see if they have a good bouncer. For your protection, you know.

Nah.

The feeling I got was this guy's a regular, and the staff humors him a bit, and this wasn't highly unusual except for it's level today. The rest of my lunch was enjoyable. Me and the waitresses finished the discussion in a civil manner, part of which centered around his reaction.

He seemed to be voicing his displeasure in general, not just at me (i.e. talking loud enough for all to hear).

After spouting-off like that, there wasn't much he could do but leave.

The crescendo began with his loudly proclaiming: "They're sending their rapists and murders here"!

That pretty much brought a silence from us, and left him babbling-on alone like a loudmouthed idiot for another minute or two, until he realized the scene he created, tossed some bills on the counter, and split without saying another word.

But I'll tell ya', that minute or two of loudmouthed solo rhetoric was highly angered and emotionally charged. Almost like the kinda' stuff that immediately precedes a physical fight. Which is why those of us at the counter turned silent.

One of many...I feel bad for Trump supporters...They will be extremely disappointed as yet again by how much trmp will back paddle.

First case... the drain the swamp, so far he has been tapping so many old political establishments, he will need hovercraft to just the traverse the swamp!

Items on the list the he will be back paddled from.

Kill obamacare but yet keep the precondition people on the insurance and those under 25...Like 90% obama care but not ObamaCare; trump care...crappy version of the ObamaCare!

Raise the minim wage to 10 dollars

Rebuild the info Structure

Bring back manufacturing jobs

Impose tariffs on goods made in China and Mexico; Be prepared to pay extra for Chinese crap!

Renegotiate or withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement and Trans-Pacific Partnership; be prepared to pay extra for everything else crap!

Cut taxes; borrow to pay for everything!

add 25 million jobs, hello supper inflation!

A childcare plan that allows parents to deduct child-care expenses from their income taxes, give new mothers six weeks of paid leave, and an Expanded Earned Income Tax Credit for low-income families. Like what Obama and Democrats want and he was killed in the house by republicans!

Trump has focused on a dramatic build-up of the U.S. military, including 540,000 active U.S. Army soldiers, new missile defense system, and a full audit of the Pentagon. More borrowing!

Trump has further promised to have the United States become energy independent from OPEC and "any nations hostile to our interests." This is funny one...remember the high paying jobs....expect the gas price to go over 5 dollars!

Additionally, Trump has spoken on his plans to seize oil deposits in Iraq. OK, that is war Crime, but still That is my favorite!

Trump has also said he would keep U.S. troops on the ground in Afghanistan; more borrowing to pay for never ending war...This will go fine!

Yup....be prepared to be washed by the wave of disappointments! This is what happens when you confuse reality TV start with a would be president.
