Yet for the candidate they work for, they let "deplorable", "irredeemable", "racist", etc. , etc., vanish.

Why did Trump win the primaries when, on the national level, he's going to get beat so easily? It was because the GOP divided up the rest of the field between many folk. Trump was able to grab some portion of the disgruntled vote, the rest ended up split over the rest of the candidates.

So while Trump gained the ability to win the primaries, he was never capable of winning on the general election. Jeb may have been beat by Clinton too, but he wouldn't have been as embarrassing in a general election. It's hard to imagine many of the other GOP candidates performing worse than Trump in the generals.
