If last night is the new norm, i agree with Schieffer comparing it to Wrestlemania. The mud slinging was so bad, if this were a high school debate club they'd be thrown out. If it were on this forum, they'd be banned

My own ideas:

1) A 2.5-3 minute time limit to answer the original question and "Oscars" music drowns them out after

2) The other debaters mic is muted so they *can't* interrupt

3) A 1.5 minute response and the same thing

4) The other debaters mic is muted so they *can't* respond or interrupt

5) Next question!

Also, no audience except those on stage with the questions. No moderator whining about the audience because there is none, and they can watch on tv/online like the rest of us

If mic muting isn't enough, the debater whose turn it isn't has to go in a soundproof glass box that locks until it's his/her turn

Thoughts? Other ideas?

That's funny. Last night I was thinking if they kept talking, the Mods should sound an air horn. LMAO!

Makes sense to me...cit the mikes.

I really like the idea of mic muting.

I think I would like to see at least one debate go the other direction. No moderator, two open microphones, and a half hour to have at each other.

At the end of the half hour announce a new topic.

Random questions. Fishbowl style.

And more than just two people debating.

Not bad but it has to start with unbiased moderators who do not have an agenda of some kind. I'm not really referring to the last debate but this year just about all moderators were not fair and unbiased. They should not be biased for anyone or against anyone, including the questions. Or, we could have two moderators alternating questions, one from the left and one from the right.

I don't have an easy way to improve the moderator question asking, but at least mic cutting would deny Trump the continuous whining that his opponent went over and the moderator didn't cut her off

Let's be fair and say that Tim Kaine's mike should have been cut off because he incessantly interrupted Mike Pence all debate long. He was very rude throughout the whole thing.

Not bad suggestions.

I would add:

If the person is not answering the question, the mic is muted. The question is repeated. If the person continues to dodge, ,mic muted and loss of debate time.
