Tonight, speaking for her mother in Cleveland, Chelsea Clinton claimed that if her mother wins, college will be FREE for families making UNDER 125K a year. How is she going to pay for that-and how is she going to actually get that through congress and the senate. This appears to be pandering at its worst.

does it mean basically that everyone making more than 125K a year will now have to foot the bill for everyone who wants to go to college?

I realize this is not breaking news but I want some of the people who want hillary explain how this is going to work

seems like lots of people who make that sort of upper end income in her limits can afford college tuition.

How is that equal under the law anyway?

Clinton's an idiot. There's no way that's feasible. That's free education for 83% of households.

Google is your friend. It turns out she was mistaken(or whatever you want to call it) about Clinton's plan. Here is the actual plan: https://www.hillaryclinton.com/briefing/factsheets/2015/08/10/college-compact-costs/

Did you know you should not believe everything you read on the internets, especially when fact checking is easy?

Well that totally explains it. She's going to close loopholes and expenditures for the most fortunate.

The Cost – and How We Will Pay It Clinton’s New College Compact plan costs in the range of $350 billion over 10 years and will be fully paid for by closing tax loopholes and expenditures for the most fortunate. We need to make ambitious investments so that cost is no longer a barrier to college education, and the burden of debt does not hold back everyday Americans.

Now that's a level of detail a candidate can be proud of!!!:lamo

Bottom line, she's going to raise taxes and she's going to put the states in a position where they also have to raise taxes if they want these grants. Does it mean that everyone making more than $125k is going to feel the bite? Well, she doesn't say specifically but it's a pretty safe bet!

so Hillary's campaign site is denying what her daughter said tonight? Okie dokie

Why bother fact checking when you'll come along and do it for me? Although, when it comes to funding, she's got Trump level vagueness going on:

PHOENIX — Gov. Doug Ducey said Friday that he will oppose any effort to hike taxes to boost education funding, even one where voters would make the decision.

“I have said that we are not going to raise taxes,” the governor said. “And I have been consistent.”

Keep Tucson stupid!

I grant you that. Unfortunately, that is the norm.

Part of the problem of campaigns is no one ever has to explain anything in detail, like to fund their proposals or how to get them passed. I realize a lot can change before a final bill with all the backroom deals, but her promises are just way too vague

Then again Trump promises nothing except a giant wall around mexico. Not sure the good that can come from his election

I think college should be free at the better schools, but a lot of them have turned to "no loans" policies already. It's crazy to me that someone has to go massively in debt to pursue a top 10 worldwide degree. That is truly only in America, and it's a disgrace. Of course, the OP wants the poor to stay poor so that doesn't surprise me. The last i would tolerate any objection to this from would be the wealthy who can attend college with no concern of taking out loans ever, simply because their parents are loaded. In fact if the brat of a millionaire had to take out loans because his parents paid for the poor to attend, that would be FINE with me

However there are way too many commuter schools used by kids who barely passed high school who just want a place to party and get away from the parents, and they flunk out at about 50% rate in just 1 year. That is an amount of waste i can't support. Even if she accomplishes taxing the rich, better things to spend it on

So Turtle's thread title is still accurate, even if his OP's not.

if my OP is not correct, than Chelsea was lying to the audience in Cleveland. I merely reported what she said.

I listened to a Yale law professor one of my good friends (also a YL professor) recommended to me at reunion weekend. This self professed socialist made lots of sense to me. he claimed the wealth inequalities in the USA were not from accumulated capital but the amount wealthy parents spend on their kids versus middle class and lower (such as 50K a year GRADE schools in NYC for example) One of his solutions was for rich universities (like Yale) that have huge endowments to expand their classes meaning instead of spending 60K a year on 5K students they should spend 30K a year on 10K students. I think that is a great idea. Now my niece, now at Yale 3-4 weeks, claims that would be "unfair" because it "cheapens" her degree. an interesting comment from someone who spent most of the summer campaigning for Hillary and "social justice" and claims Trump favors the "rich and the elite"

Well everyone knows that a family making $123K cannot afford to help send their single child to college but that a family making $127K can afford to help send their three children to college (and help that poor family making only $123K). Ask Hillary for the details. ;)

Therefore, it should be quite popular. ;)

That is how votes are "bought" - promise many goodies that others must pay more taxes to support (then claim that "the party of no" shot them down).

$35 billion annually is peanuts just ask Obama or Bernie - they could save that in defense budget cuts alone. ;)

Hillary believes since paper is made from wood, and that wood comes from trees, that money grows on trees.

Hillary says one thing then a member of her staff says something else so Hillary has plausible deniability. Bait and switch by proxy.
