Does it really matter who invented it?
 
Accuracy is always important.
I meant in the sense that it's an enjoyable form of entertainment, do we really need to argue about who did it first?

Well, none of that is opera but maybe someone can set a Star Trek episode to a Sun Ra album and come up with one.

Doctor Who. I rest my case.

I wouldn't really classify that as "Space Opera." There's too little space involved, and too few big honking space ships flying around in it making "pew pew" noises at one another.

Hell! The Doctor is a pacifist, for God's sakes. Interstellar war and battles in space are some of the most defining characteristics of the genre.
 
Soap opera in space is more apt. ;)

Science fiction is not a US invention.
