The scientific method isn't just used by scientists, it's used by anyone who has a problem. When there's a problem, you do something you think will fix it. If it's working, you keep doing it but when it's not, you tr to find something else. You don't keep doing the thing which isn't working and ignore the results. Sadly, this is what many politicians do. Their stances are often shaped by their background and they never change their stances (except when the party or the general populace do)

The method I'm talking about is on the left while the one politicians currently use is on the right. This is not to diss religious users on here but it really shows how willfully ignorant a republican would be if he found irrefutable evidence that universal health care was actually cheaper or a democrat when he finds out that there is very little correlation between cities with high gun control and cities with low gun control.

Here's how politicians can apply the scientific method: Really dive into the issue to determine whether the act they are proposing will carry out its intended effects. After the act is signed by the president, give a law some time to do its effects then vote on whether or not it's doing its job.

Willful political ignorance isn't just in politicians, it's also in ordinary citizens. When many republicans are told that 97% of scientists agree on global warming, they don't go "hmm, maybe manmade activity is withering away our ozone layer." they go "them maybe the scientists are wrong." or when an anti vaccination parent is shown irrefutable proof that vaccinations do not in fact cause autism. Or when 9/11 "truthers" are proven wrong.

Just something interesting to think about next time you are told evidence for something which conflicts with your political worldview.

I read your post with interest and would only like to make one comment. The "left" is the new conservative movement clinging to "faith". We, as a nation and in Europe have tried huge social programs and socialization of individual rights and responsibilities here and in the form of social demcracy in Europe. It has not worked and as noble as the goals might be, as well meant as the attempts were, it is time to apply the scientific method, admit we have been at it the wrong way and try something new.

You do realize that the scientific method was invented by a Franciscan friar?
