It's an optimistic portrayal of the future. The twenty-third century depicted in the series is a liberal utopia. There is no racism, no poverty, no war, no pollution, and no money. Instead there is world government.

It's a stupid conceit, of course, but one that appeals to the average audience.

And the creator of this universe, Gene Roddenberry, was a real piece of work -- a petty horn dog and pervert. A poor writer who created the concept of the series but then had to rely against his will on better writers and producers to make it a success. He fought tooth and nail against the people responsible for making Star Trek's best episodes, and especially against those who wrote and produced Star Trek, The Next Generation, which became a big success with excellent writing and production mainly because Gene had died in the meantime. He was constantly re-writing the work of others, and a script never left his hands that he did not make worse.

Liberals look upon themselves as being basically good, and Roddenberry showed them a future in which human nature is purely good. But in his own life Roddenberry showed how rotten human nature could be.

Well I see someone hasn't made it to DS9 yet.

Creators trying to portray a reality or depiction of nature better than they are is nothing new. Hell I do it.

Creators are alcoholics, obsessive compulsives, chronic depressives and more often than not have social anxiety out the ears, and their works are often brilliant and beautiful regardless.

Yes RDM's vision of Star Trek is much better than Roddenberry's

Star Wars isn't Star Trek

These aren't the movies you're looking for. Move long.

Sigh. You realize you just mortally offended half of DP by not being able to remember the difference between Star Wars and Star Trek long enough to type a post right?

I should leave it as is but I'm going to fix it because looking at it makes me cringe.

I was once a Roddenberry fan but yeah, it has been pretty much established that Roddenberry stumbled into success and the more he let others run TNG (due to failing health) the better it got. Yes, he was a womanizer (like that's unusual in a Hollywood producer!) and kind of a jerk.

Yes, his ill-developed and ill-explained utopian ideas were probably the most far-out thing about ST and more unlikely than even transporters.

The shows and movies are still better than 99% of what's on TV.

I think you should leave it. Kind of sums up the value of the original post and the authors k knowledge on the subject.

So basically you are saying Gene Roddenberry was flawed, as are every single person on earth. Thank you for sharing.

I stopped watching Star Trek shows when they came up with a female Captain. Women can barely drive a car, let alone a starship.

Have you ever seen an episode of Star Trek?

File under: Reason #34,623 that conservatives pathologically need something to manufacture outrage about.

No one rational cares.
