The Left hates Donald Trump, but nothing has inspired more invective than his outreach to the black community. It’s like he has barged into an exclusive club wearing the wrong color shoes.

In a recent column in The New York Times, Charles Blow sounds positively unhinged by Trump’s overture to African-Americans, writing a hate-filled screed that calls the GOP candidate a bigot, a reprobate, and a charlatan whose soul is “dark” and who is “a prime example of the worst of humanity.” And that’s just in the opening paragraphs.

Of course, many of the same voices criticizing Trump for reaching out to blacks were previously critical of him for not reaching out to blacks.

Some of Trump's critics have scorned Trump’s bleak portrayal of the African-American community. They have pointed out that there are many successful blacks, an updated version of “a lot of my friends are black.” It is true, of course. But don’t jump on those who think blacks are not doing well. Liberals – including President Obama -- have spent years telling the country that African-Americans are oppressed, underprivileged, discriminated against and left behind. When Trump echoes those descriptions, they have only themselves to blame.

One of Trump's best lines was when he addressed the black community. "What the Hell have you got to lose?"

What indeed. Hillary's efforts in favor of school choice? The tremendous Obama economy? 50% unemployment among young blacks? Violent crime in the black community ten times more prevalent per capita than anywhere else?

Nothing funnier than the right telling the left what they think. No matter how many times they get it wrong, they just keep repeating the same mistake.

Yeah, I'm just quivering in my boots from Trump's outreach to blacks.

Scary stuff, bro.

Yea, isn't it funny how that works?

"They're attacking Trump, that means they are scared of him! They think he's winning!"

The real threat this election isn't blacks; they just aren't as likely to show up to the polls for Hillary or Trump en masse like they did for Obama in '08. What really scares Democrat pollsters, is the number of poor or working class whites who will show up for Trump. Trump has gotten poor whites and working class whites to register to vote who haven't voted in years, or voted ever.

So Trump comes to a half empty black church...... and suddenly the left are afraid of Trumps outreach to the black community? yea right.

I've always got to wonder why certain people on the right think that they give their statements more power (like, extra hit points or something? +10 to attack rolls?) by accusing their target of being "afraid". Note the stupidity of the thread's title in this regard.

I suppose there's a kernel of truth in every such stupid myth: every sane human being on this planet should be "sacred" of the prospect of President Trump.

The Right Wing Media machine says Clinton is sick and dying, so the Trump lemmings believe that.

The Right Wing Media machine says the Clinton's are responsible for 60 or so deaths, so the Trump lemmings believe that.

The RW media machine says Blacks are flocking to vote for Trump, so the Trump lemmings believe that.

God I wish the lemmings would just ONCE think for themselves. I'm not optimistic though.

The Democrats should be nervous about Trump with regards the Black community. He has practically no backers their, his logic was good and common sense. That means an inroad would bring a lot of votes. Coming from zero that could make a difference.

Nope.

"the vast majority of those voters aren’t actually new to voting or to the Republican Party, but rather they are reliable past voters in general elections.
“All he seems to have done is bring new people into the primary process, not bring new people into the general-election process … It’s exciting that these new people that are engaged in the primary but those people are people that are already going to vote Republican in the [fall],”

Seeing as he's polling at essentially zero with black Americans, no, it doesn't particularly scare the left.

You should really try reality one day. It might scare you at first, but you might come to really like it.

To the bolded:

Wrong!

In terms of addressing men and women of color, that was one of his worst lines!

And it shows how out-of-touch he is! :doh

Trump basically made a drug dealer argument:

"What've you got to lose?"

No idea about that - but he just told an entire race of Americans that there lives are so worthless, they cannot get any worse! :doh

What an idiot.

He might be smart in some (or even many) things, but this statement was not one of them!

I must be that much of a cynic when it comes to commentary like this, but I do not buy at all that "the left" is scared of Trump.

Assuming that Trump can pull a percentage or two of a minority vote, the rest will still be solidly Democrat. We do not even have much evidence that the minority vote intends to stay home in November or go 3rd party.

As for "what the hell have you got to lose?" My guess is what is left of their patience.

No he told them after 60 years of voting Democrat their lives are as bad as they have ever been, and he's right. What an idiot does is keep voting for the same old promises that delivers the same old failure, so what do they have to lose by voting Republican?

That kind of monolithic portrayal of African Americans is not help helping Trump get their votes.

Apparently it scares Trump as well he wont speak about blacks in front of a black audience and with 1% of black people supporting him that Trump scares black people as well.

I'd say you've tweaked a nerve a little here, judging by the responses.

Greetings, TheGoverness. :2wave:

Reminds me of the movie Trading places starring Eddie Murphy!

Hello, Polgara. :2wave:

I've never heard of it. :3oops:

Very funny comedy, which Murphy excelled at! He's one of my favorites, and I have all his movies. If you ever want to really laugh, try that one. I'm not sure, but I think he won an award for it!

Your story is from May. NPR ran a story 2 nights ago where they said that Trump has inspired the "redneck" vote (their words) in a way that Romney and Mccain were unable to do.
