"Apparently, Merkel winning that Time magazine “Person of the Year” cover story last year wasn’t worth the massive upheaval it inflicted on her countrymen."

Merkel was blind to all the hardship caused by the influx of immigrants, hardship that the common people had to endure, hardship to which she and the others of her own social class were immune. She could bask in the praise and awards for her humanitarianism from the elite, who cared nothing for ordinary people, who were denigrated for being "racist" and "xenophobic".

As Jim Geraghty put it: "No German chancellor has done more to change the demographics of Europe since... oh...."

She was just doing one of her about faces like with the nuclear power plants. It is well known that she will try ruthlessly to extend executive power beyond constitutional law, international treaties and, what is causing her problems in this case, go beyond anything her population really wants, for her political advantage. But like everyone, she ist not always right and her acting without real control ..... But there was nobody that could stop her.
