Ahhh the information age. The answers to everything. What happens after death? Why am I here? What is my purpose?
Sooo - let's talk about our blessed nation. What symbols do we have? What objects or locations really ... speak ... the message of freedom? The Statue of Liberty. Totally. The Lincoln Memorial. Oh yes. Arlington Cemetery. Without question.
But the free-thinker would probably shrug, sipping their latte at Starbucks, checking out FB and CNN online. The Statue of Liberty? Meh. It's just a French art piece with a nice poem. Copper. Means nothing today. Arlington Cemetery? Yeah. Looks nice. Lots of graves. Some guys standing motionless next to a grave of ... I don't even know who. Whatever. And Lincoln Memorial? Concrete. Marble. Whatever. Everything can be replaced. We can stop traffic if our cause is just and valid. The Anthem has verses about slavery (YEAH - which NO ONE recognizes, or celebrates, or sings ... or has EVER in like 65 years).
SOOO - a biracial 49ers QB gets paid $119 million. To. Throw. a. freaking. ball. He decides - you know what - all these symbols ... my 1st Amendment rights are more important. If I want to lay an American flag down on the field and take a piss on it ... I'm within my rights to do so. And all you white people telling me that my methods are disrespectful ... YOU CHECK your white privilege !! You don't know what police brutality is like !!
(all this while wearing a Fidel Castro t shirt, and socks with pigs in cop uniforms). The same QB who was fined for using racial slurs.
SOOOO - the $1 million dollar question - is ANYTHING worth respecting anymore? Does ANYTHING deserve reverence? Or ... have we effectively de-evolved as a society into a shouting match?
