Prayer in PUBLIC schools

N4T Investigators: Church and State
Tucson - It's 12:40 P.M., and in the Islamic Center of Tucson, a time to pray.

Muslims have a strict daily prayer schedule, five times a day at specific times. One of those times is in the middle of the school day.

Ten miles away, in a room off the library at Desert View High School, four to six Muslim students pray during every school day for about 10 minutes. Sunnyside Unified School District officials tell the News 4 Tucson Investigators that all but one of the students pray during their lunch period, the other misses a few minutes of a class.

Giving a private room is PROMOTING prayer

No it isn't.
And so what if they are given a private room?
It's all part of public accomendation laws.
If a teacher isn't leading the pray I see no problem with that.
Again I ask,are Christians and Jews asking for their own prayer rooms and are being denied?

Fair enough.
Are Christians and Jews asking for their own prayer rooms and are being denied?

Are u crazy the ACLU wouldn't have that! And the left would pitch a fit!

As was announced by the St. Cloud School District, they are being politically correct by giving Muslim students access to “private rooms with prayer rugs for the five daily prayers.” In addition, “Districtwide, school lunch menus provide pork-free options for students, and staff members try to spur the newcomer students’ interest in sports, culture clubs, and other extracurricular activities to develop connections beyond the classroom.”

This brings nothing to the table except your hate for the ACLU,.

My God

Stating that the ACLU wouldn't put up with something means I hate them? LOL

This forum won't/wouldn't put up with Drudge links in the main forum...does this mean I hate the forum?

That it one school district and I hope they get their asses sued off.
You do know that majority of St.Cloud is Christian, and it is the Christians on the schoolboard who helped create that ruling.

In school there should be. Excessive displays of praying creates a hostile environment. Ideally all prayers should be at home, in a church, or during a plane crash.

That would be "ideally" for you. The First Amendment places no such restrictions on freedom of religion.

What? How does prayer create a hostile environment?

Most of this stuff has been pretty thoroughly hashed out in the courts. Not all of it, but I'm pretty sure that almost any situation you can think of has been litigated by now.

I agree that it has been hashed out, but the proponents for "god in school" can never give a straight answer of what they mean by prayer or god in schools.

Employers can restrict prayer and religious symbolism at work. So can public schools. Face it prayer is only appropriate at home or at a house of worship.

And thats whats wrong with America the PC Pass

Sorry if I have a life and to busy to care what the ACLU does.
I have a company to run,a wife to love, and grandchildren in need of spoiling.
I have charity work and volunteering to do.
Are you mad that people don't care about what you care about?

Or at public schools. We agree!

No we don't!

We have Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion

But according to u Freedom of Religion should only be at home and a designated building.

Than Freedom of Speech should be restricted to the same!

Just shows u are nuts!

VOL, you seem to be a proponent for god(s) in school. In your opinion, what SHOULD NOT be permitted in a school setting when it comes to god(s) in school?

I'm fine with the way it currently is.

Giving a private room is PROMOTING prayer
Incorrect. It's a reasonable accommodation, and it is provided regardless of the religion of the student or teacher who requests it.

And no, the highly slanted article you link does not establish that people of other religions are barred from similar resources.

Im an athesist who has no lroblem with religion being schools. Teachers leading prayers and christmas partys do not offend me.

The gov is not allowed to establish an offical religion but there us no reason they should not be allowed to reflect the values of local communities by including religion in their enviroment.

Teacher's,being paid by the State are agents of the State
A teacher leading a prayer is showing preference to one religion.
A big no-no according to the 1St. Amendment.

The Supreme Court's decision on Vitale vs Engal backs me up

There have been many news stories about prayer in public schools. Should it be allowed should it not be allowed? The debate goes back and forth. It seems to me that those that are FOR prayers in school are not very clear on what they mean.

this question is for those that think prayers should be in school or bring god back in the classroom.

What does prayers in school mean to you?

for example:
teachers/school admin should be permitted to lead prayer before class.
kids should be free to pray together in groups during non-classroom time.
kids should be free to pray anytime by themselves during non class time.

what does it mean to you?

I do not see how Congress could pass a law one way or the other. Religious practice is not forbidden on public land. Au contraire. The state is not allowed to interfere.

Or at public schools. We agree!

I would think, one must differentiate that. Anyone can say anything or should be on public land and Congress may not interfere. Can't have the prayers of the disciples of the Flying Spaghetti Monster restricted.
