(CNN) — The pictures are heartbreaking: Millions of honeybees lie dead after being sprayed with an insecticide targeting Zika-carrying mosquitoes.

"On Saturday, it was total energy, millions of bees foraging, pollinating, making honey for winter," beekeeper Juanita Stanley said. "Today, it stinks of death. Maggots and other insects are feeding on the honey and the baby bees who are still in the hives. It's heartbreaking."

Stanley, co-owner of Flowertown Bee Farm and Supply in Summerville, South Carolina, said she lost 46 beehives -- more than 3 million bees -- in mere minutes after the spraying began Sunday morning.

Juanita Stanley says she lost more than 3 million bees.

"Those that didn't die immediately were poisoned trying to drag out the dead," Stanley said. "Now, I'm going to have to destroy my hives, the honey, all my equipment. It's all contaminated."

It likely Einstein never said this:

“If the bee disappeared off the face of the earth, man would only have four years left to live"

But it is often said he did..

Whatever, it is an interesting thought.

the mosquitos were also killed so that part was a success. think it through

Not necessarily a true statement.

They've been spraying the stuff in Miami area and there are still mosquitos. And many are found with the virus.

Man has a long history of shooting himself in the foot, and this is another example.

Hitler killed 6 million Jews but the Autobahn was a great success.

You mean kinda like that?

What a shame. Bees are already under duress from insecticides, among other things. We generally aren't very thoughtful when panicked. Of course, the other side of this is exactly who among us wants to be the one to tell an expecting mother that her child is going to be grossly disfigured and deficient? I'd absolutely hate to have to deliver that message.

Too much hubris. Too little perfection

No doubt, the good news is it looks like they found a cure for Zika already, its in testing.

Good news. It's always better when we use the proper tool. A little refinement is required instead of going after such things with a sledge hammer.

Think of all the other beneficial fauna and flora that was killed or poisoned. Not to mention humans.

It's the egg-head scientists that the government hires that are ****ed.

Scary part is that many crops we eat depend on bees for pollination. Florida Oranges for example.

Yep. I purposely let the clover grow in my yard and surrounds because the bees love it. It's very clean stuff, and the bees need clean sources of food these days. Too much is treated with things really, really bad for bees these days. Even Sevin, a more benign insecticide, is bad for bees if you apply it to blooming plants. Some care is required.

Honey will be expensive.

Fortunately for me, there are a couple excellent local options around home, and even one produced by my college. These poor people might have had their businesses devastated, and markets will suffer from this monumentally poor decision, but least I will have honey to put on my pancakes.

because it isn't. vaccines are pretty kickass, as is the internet. also, sliced sandwich bread has vastly improved since that duck-feed **** they called bread when i was a kid. that bread was so flimsy that you couldn't even spread butter without tearing it.
