What's the worst thing to have happened in your lifetime?

The rise of the internet troll comes to mind.

That's the greatest thing on the planet. Stop complaining about the good things.

If I were looking from a personally selfish point of view, the Barack Obama years were not bad financially for me. But I truly do not attribute any of that to him. 2008/2009 in manufacturing here in the US were the worst I'd known of. I truly believe that the things our Rep. Congress have done/ not done are what has kept my business moving forward and possibly the events of the previous President showing up as the results do, years later. I believe now, financially, we are on the verge of a collapse. Can I blame it all on him? No, but again, he set the tone and refused to truly balance the budget and make the effort to bring down our national debt. And he alone, should take responsibility for doubling it during his terms.

My biggest gripe / fear is however, not the financial mess but the social mess he has created. He has pitted people against people (blacks against whites, against cops, against laws). He has struck deals that make absolutely no sense with our enemies. He has insulted our country to other countries. He has destroyed the strength of our military and made us look weak to the world. He has allowed fraud and corruption to move not just forward but to flourish in his house. To me, he is a man without a conscious without a love for the people that made this country great. To me, he wants to destroy the America that I love, that my parents and their parents loved and that millions fought to create and fight to defend.

loss of dollars I can live with - loss of freedom I cannot. To me, he is the true symbol of a narcissistic leader who prefers tyranny over freedom.

I love how many people say this: "the Barack Obama years were not bad financially for me. But I truly do not attribute any of that to him. "

Interesting to see what you would have said if Gore was president when the economy crashed at the end of his second term, and a resurgent GOP put in the new President back in 2008. I'm sure you'd be singing him so many praises, your voice would now be hoarse.

Everything you said is spot on, I love how liberals think Obama has done such a great job and have no concern for the $20T in debt he has put us in.

If liberals believe that we can sustain endless debt and just keep on printing money then why do we need taxes?

Same remark I made in post 52 applies here too.

Disagreement here and there does not mean HM refuted FDR's general ideas, quite the opposite actually.

That's a far cry from claiming " But, to hear the idiots talk, it was as if FDR ruined the country instead of pulling it out of a depression."

I would agree that if anybody said FDR's policies ruined the country they might be considered an idiot.
On the hand I would say that those who question whether or not they pulled us out of the depression would hardly be considered an idiot.

Fair enough

Taxes are a mechanism for social "justice" to liberals. If money literally did grow on trees, they would still need a way to mollify their raging yet tiny hate boners.

I don't sing the praises of anyone that raises the national debt. I complained about Bush. But that was a drop in the bucket compared to Obama.

Historically? I would have to say 9/11. It completely changed the world I lived in.

Personally, the death of my grandmother. She died in a car crash when I was 21. We were pretty close and it was so sudden and tragic.

As related to the point in my op, the worst thing to have happened in my lifetime is the ridiculous growth of the human population. 53 years ago, HP was a fairly manageable 3-1/4 billion. Today it is an absurd 7-1/2 billion and still growing. As a result, everything that is not food for human consumption is being crowded out and killed off. So, yeah---people are too successful. In the end, that may well be our downfall. In the meantime, I've witnessed the die off of virtually everything, from jungles to fish in the sea.

That is by far the worst thing to have happened in my lifetime, bar none.

Reagan getting elected.

Agreed!

Greetings, Calamity. :2wave:

Maybe "Soylent Green" wasn't so far-fetched after all!

I think the memory that I will never get out of my head are the pictures of the caskets of first graders in an upper middle class CT enclave who were preparing to enjoy a tradition of making Gingerbread houses in their first grade classrooms less than 2 weeks before Christmas when a man came in and shot them as they lay huddled on top of each other behind the toilet in their classroom bathroom. In my opinion, the events of that day are the most horrific in my lifetime, even more so than 9/11.

For some it's gays being allowed to marry. For others it's the loss of the idealistic days when America was great. For others still, it was when Reagan took over and turned the US into a Right Wing haven for the religious nuts and the wealthy. For others it may be the increase in prison populations or maybe the sharp decrease in birth rates of a certain "favored" demographic.

For me, it's the demise of the great beasts. In my lifetime, I've seen the numbers of wild, majestic animals dwindle to almost nothing. I suspect that I may even live long enough to see some go extinct. And, that really sucks.

Case in point:
New elephant study shows catastrophic decline in Africa - CNN.com

Well, the charismatic megafauna are certainly nice to look at, but the real disaster is the thousands of species going extinct every year that are not noticed at all.

The drop in genetic diversity is staggering, and will last a lot longer than humans.
