I think we are afforded the ability to be a bit more circumspect to groups and individuals who might and do us harm. Communists, for example, during the Cold War... we didn't just let anyone in that desired to come. Why do you say Islam is no such organization?
Well, it is not really clear that McCarthy is, what we want. It does seem to have stabilized out domestic politics to the point that even as a democracy we were capable of mastering an immense challenge over a very extended period. That was an almost unbelievable achievement after all in terms of political science. In any event, while Communists were not allowed into the US during the Cold War, American citizens could argue for Communism albeit with definite disadvantages.
But I would see a difference between Communism and Islam that makes it seem sensible to treat the two differently. While they are both the ideology of our enemy, all countries that were communist were declared enemies. On the other hand, Muslim countries are often close allies and in some cases crucial to achieving major security and foreign policy goals.
