Mom Asks What Will Happen When Her Toddler Son Becomes a 'Grown Black Man'

Race and politics are not mutually inclusive unless you make them so. You make them so. I don't, and many others here don't, as well.

If adult conversation is too much for you...
Sure, adult conversation.....like starting with the premise of:

If being black is soooo bad... why do people choose to identify their bi-racial kids (and themselves, when appropriate) as black.

You mean, mature, experienced, thoughtful, enlightened "adult conversation"....like that?

Count me out, because...it isn't.

It is some of the most self stifled crap I have not seen since in forever......well....not since I was in grade school listening to sheltered little white girls.

Uh....dood.....the topic IS.....wait for it.....RACE AND SOCIETY.....wherein, the op wonders why blacks can't just not have......problems.

Are you 100 % what your mother made you?

Or did you have something to do with the way that your life has turned out?

That is a very good point - stating that he will grow up to wear baggy drawers and a hoodie (like his daddy?) and may be treated differently based on how he chooses to appear is out of mom's control. Someone loudly saying MF this and MF that is quite likely to be treated in a "racist" (stereotypical?) manner no matter what they look (or don't look) like.

I have this theory...

If you were to take three kids at age 3 months of varying race/ethnicity (which ones is wholly irrelevant, pick any three), and placed them on a mountain top in Tibet, and they had absolutely no interaction with the outside world, ever... they would grow up being perfectly fine with each other. They wouldn't know that they were "supposed" to hate and/or be wary of each other.

Hence, it is society that screws it up, not the supposed inner differences of people.
yes, hate, bigotry and violence are taught

You are right, but if it is not acceptable in the house, he will not do it, at least until he is old enough to move out.

It doesn't matter what happens outside the house, it is how that event is handled inside the house that shapes the child.

For example, a girl that is getting bullied online can be taught that it is not important in the scheme of things or she can be taught the opposite.

What happens in the house directly affects how the kid handles things outside.

this is completely wrong just from examining the exact opposite of a good home

some kids come from homes from hell and yet

they turn out to be the most amazing of people who make humanity better just by being on the planet

conversely

normal average home with good supportive parents...one kid does exceptionally well and another goes completely off of the rails

that is reality

that is life

you think you can control everything, but you will learn that you can't

Can you give us an example of how they wanted you to turn out and how you turned out differently?

I'm liberal and they wanted me to be a conservative.

I'm an atheist, and they wanted me to be religious.

That's two.

Some kids are mentally strong by themselves.

In the case of two kids from the same household, I bet there were difference in the way they were treated.

Those are ideological differences.

I meant more about teaching the difference between right and wrong, which too many kids don't know these days.

Not necessarily true since peer pressure and wanting to fit in also heavily influences behavior. How many times have we heard Johnny was raised well and lived in a nice neighborhood and then just fell in with the wrong crowd?

by your theory, a baby is a blank slate that is written upon...

in the nature vs nurture we now understand a baby is not a blank slate

we come from a gene pool with varying challenges and gifts, each is unique and an individual

those challenges and gifts along with the society we are born into mold us

although you may think you can, you can't fit a square peg into a round hole and truth be told if you could the world would be at a loss for it

read through some threads here....some think right = conservative, wrong = liberal and they would have zero problem removing the rights of said liberals

Probably around the time the kid realizes the depth and magnitude of the racism that exists in the country.

The blind innocence you and radcen display is so precious.

Yeah, you bad ...

th

I learned a lot from my parents the most of which was fear of consequences which was why I never did drugs and was not out on the street making trouble.

That is a lesson sadly missing with kids today.

People are often judged by "unfair" standards regardless of the best efforts of their fine parents.

Some kids also act one way at home in front of their parents and act differently away from home.

I tend to believe that, in most cases, people are born with their core personalities, and that life experiences tend to solidify them.

Yep. And even some (like my parents), think my sexuality is "morally wrong".

yes

some even believe that you will be damned because of what is natural for you

now that gay is becoming main stream, I see some who are becoming more at odds and confused with that belief system even though they still accept it, we move forward incrementally

My mom and dad are both left-handed, but i'm right-handed.

As hard as they tried to force me to use spoons and pencils with my left hand, i'd always switch to my right.

It's pretty common for apples to roll far from trees once they have fallen.

You are right and it is the parents job to teach the kid how to handle things.

The fact is, is that you shouldn't sweat the little things, and everything is a little thing.

It is good that you turned out correctly coming from such defective parents.

That or simply be a pessimist. That way you can never be disappointed - only pleasantly surprised. ;)
