George Takei, who played Sulu in the original Star Trek, isn't happy about Sulu the character coming out as gay in a new Star Trek movie. Takei came out as begin gay some time ago.

It would dishonor Rodenberry's creation, he thinks. Rodenberry was very supportive of LGBT causes, but his Sulu was the result of a lot of thought, and there were reasons for keeping him a straight character. If they want an LGBT character they should create a new one, he thinks, and not imply that Sulu had been in the closet all those years, because it's not like Sulu to be in the closet.

But Takei misses the whole point of SJW assaults on these old classics like Star Trek, Iron Man, and Ghost Busters, which is to destroy the straight white vision that created them. It is vengeance that SJWs seek; that's their "justice".

Maybe Ohura could get a sex change and Kirk could marry them.

George Takei has a right to his opionions.

Let me guess, this is going to be another one of your threads in which you make a bunch of allegations, and you and one or two others who agree with you offering no proof to back up those allegations, after the dozens or so times everyone else has been asking you to,sn't it? This is going to turn into another "homosexals are bad" thread, isn't it?
I'll think I'll skip this thread.

The idea came from Simon Pegg, who plays Scotty in the new films and penned the Beyond screenplay, and director Justin Lin, both of whom wanted to pay homage to Takei's legacy as both a sci-fi icon and beloved LGBT activist.

I normally wouldn't have a problem with them making Sulu gay. It is a reboot so mixing things up is part of the fun.

But don't say you are paying homage to Mr. Takei if you are going to ignore his request on the subject.

Why are we to assume he was in the closet, because we didn't meet a spouse or boyfriend? That would put most of the characters in the closet.

Oh, my! You're one of those ones. How very, very wondeful!

Won't see it just like I won't see the next iron man.
No reason to support this stupidity.

After watching zootopia almost wanted to write Pixar and tell them to keep politics
Out of cartoons for kids.

It would fall on deaf ears.

Oops, too late. You already posted an asinine comment in it.

Many of the characters were kept ambiguous in that regard, and everyone assumes what they will. That is done deliberately.

All I had to see was a picture of the 4 female ghost busters, and I knew I wasn't going to see that movie. Sorry, but it just doesn't translate. The whole ethos of men going to battle with the forces of evil against long odds and all the testosterone that entails is lost. I can't help but think that if 4 women were out to bust ghosts they'd do it differently, and so what the "new ghostbusters" really represents is a failure of creative imagination.

They ruined ST anyway with this new time line. Seen the first one, I won't watch anymore of them. Probably won't see the new series coming out either.

ol yea I just saw the previews and was like no.
now had they wrote the story that they were their daughters or something then yea I could
buy into that, but no they tried to re-write the entire thing and I am sorry it was an epic failure.

that is like iron man. she wouldn't be iron man but some variation like war machine.
tony stark is iron man and will always be iron man.

Hollywood has to pervert everything even kids movies just for politics.
of course they haven't made an original movie in forever.

the first 2 movies were great.

Sulu had a daughter, which was played by Jacquelin Kim, in Star Trek Generations.
Takai was not interested in making his character gay, but rather moving Asian characters out of stereotypes.
They originally wanted him to have a katana.

Women would capture ghosts differently than men?

Why is it so integral to the plot that Sulu be gay? This is just blatant pandering to a specific demographic. Unless he's going to fight Carol Marcus (assuming she's in it) for the right to violate Kirk, then who really cares? What's next? Spock comes out as being transgendered? It's stupid.

Space ninja Sulu beating down hordes of Klingons would have been epic!

It's not that the new ghost busters is bad merely because they're women (though that is a massive departure from the source material which does strike me as an overreach), it's because the writing, 'humour' and jokes are ****ing awful.

Even as a 'inclusive/progressive' adaptation it fails because the black woman is a walking stereotype, and the only member without any kind of scientific background or expertise (who apparently makes up for it with her racial 'street smarts') whereas the others are all pretty much accomplished geniuses.

Also I'm entirely behind George Takei on this.

In a similar vein, I was having a conversation with a good friend regarding old tv shows and I mentioned that I like to watch Perry Mason. Into our conversation she, being something of an SJW herself, says, "You know Raymond Burr was gay in real life, right?"

I was actually speechless for a second, which is rare. I finally replied, "Yes, I have known that for quite some time."

Inside I was thinking, "What the eff does that have to do with watching and liking old tv shows?"

I guess you're not supposed to like him because he's gay?

What's been funny with this is the "We can say that word but you can't" mentality towards Takei.

Because he's gay, because he's generally in favor of LGBT rights openly, it's perfectly acceptable for him to simply have his opinion and it 's entirely reasonable even if you don't agree with it.

However, what he's saying is no different than the notion that a Norse God shouldn't be played by a black guy. Or a character who was repeatedly described as being pretty much a carbon copy for Clint Eastwood and who's most striking feature are his blue eyes shouldn't be played by a black guy. (coincidentally, both played by the same badass actor). Or that Iceman shouldn't suddenly be gay. Or hell, that the Doctor shouldn't be a female or shouldn't be a American.

However typically the assumption right off the bat is that anyone suggesting such things aren't doing so because of an eye to tradition/originators intent/consistency of story/etc but rather that they're doing it because they're racist/bigoted/xenophobic/homophobic/etc.

But since Takei is well known within the SJW scene, he gets a pass and his words/arguments are simply believed to be true. Doesn't mean they agree with him, but the vitriol and mind reading of what people "really mean" isn't done with him.

That was my kind of view. I didn't really care if they made him gay. Do I think it's done singularly as a marketing and pandering ploy? Absolutely. Perhaps I'm wrong and it'll affect the plot in some way, similar to the change with Uhura and Spock, but I'm imagining it won't and thus is just there to gain Social Justice points. Even then, if that's how you want to market your movie, more power to you.

But don't say it's there to honor Takei's legacy if he then comes out against it and you go "Yeah, doing it anyways"

I don't know if it matters so much. The new Star Trek movies are crap, generic, bottom of the barrel "action" movies. It's not Star Trek, it's not sci-fi. It's just fitting as many explosions on the screen as possible and having so little imagination left that they cannot create a new IP.
