Do we have a white trash problem in this country? If so, where is it leading?

When I was growing up, nearly all of my fellow classmates were white. Very few of them caused any trouble, and almost all of them came from two-parent homes where the father, at least, had a high-paying, respectable job.

But that's all gone, now.

If the fathers are even around anymore, they're on some government-sponsored disability, snorting their oxycontin and happily enjoying their sense of entitlement. Same for the moms. These people are happy to live off government benefits, and as far as looking for jobs? Hell, they barely even try. They're much more content to ride around on their motorized scooters, blaming Obama, liberals, and immigrants for all the cracks in the sidewalks.

As time has gone on, the problem of disrespectful, out-of-control white trash has only gotten worse, at least as far as I can see.

This is a dead end. What are we, as people, going to do?

White trash don't riot at the drop of a hat.

Seems to me the left was warned about all this kind of stuff happening decades ago. I'm more or less out of patience with people that refuse to listen, so deal with the consequences of your stupid ****.

Run away, Simba. Run. Run away, and never return.

I'm not from Norway...What do we feed trolls? Can I get TrollChow at WalMart?

No, but they do commit all manner of other crime, waste resources, drain finances, depress property values, etc...

White trash are as much a drain on society as any other brand of human trash.

So does black trash but at least the white trash can control themselves with drink and drugs.

You need to spend more time amongst white trash.

we certainly do have a trash problem.... black, white, brown, or whatever... trash is trash.

we'll always have a trash problem.

Huh?

1) Human beings are not trash. The phrase, albeit not meant literally, is still disparaging.

2) In 1960, around 9% of households were single parent families. This went up to 27% in 2000, and has dropped a little bit since then. (The percentages are lower for whites, by the way.)

3) Crime rates went up from the 60s to around 1990, and have steadily fallen ever since. The perception that people cause "more trouble" does not match reality.

4) Subjectively, I haven't seen anything remotely like what you describe. How do you reconcile your perceptions and mine, which are apparently at odds?

This is why you can't just look at the people around you and draw broad conclusions about a society of 325 million people. Even if you are seeing 10,000 people in your personal survey, that's still only 0.003% of the US, and it's coming from a very specific group.

Nor does the media give you a wholly objective view. A show like Intervention can be a useful depiction of the real problem of addiction and how it affects all the people involved, but it doesn't tell you that cocaine rates have bottomed out in the past few years, how crackdowns on prescription opiates are reducing those usage rates, how drug use rates overall are pretty flat, and so forth.

This is utter nonsense.

The safety nets were largely decimated in the Clinton years. AFDC doesn't pay much, and requires that you work or be on disability to get it. "Welfare" -- cash payments -- were ended in the 90s, replaced by TANF -- temporary assistance (2-3 years). Disability is about 6% of the population, not much of an increase over the past.

People are constantly looking for work, there just isn't much out there for people with low skill levels. If they can find that kind of work, it tends to be part-time, with schedules determined by software to maximize utility to the company -- meaning that it's extremely difficult to get a second job or take care of a family, as your shifts change on a weekly basis.

The real issue is that the halcyon days when you could earn a middle-class living with a high school education are gone, and are not coming back. Further education is needed, but not everyone can afford it, or take the time off from work, or has an aptitude for it. It is both unjustified, and far too common, to blame people impacted by larger economic shifts for their circumstances.

These things almost certainly affect minorities as much as whites. This is not an ethnic issue, it's a socioeconomic issue.

This is a dead end. What are we, as people, going to do?
We are going to continue to transition from a manufacturing economy to a services economy. Either we figure out how to get our citizens better educated, or we will continue to have a lot of poverty.

So why do we never hear the phrases "black trash" or "hispanic trash?" Why is it simply "blacks" and "Mexicans?" :poke

I don't think it's supposed to be a serious thread, rather, a response to the "do we have a black problem" bait thread in one of these subforums or another, which really ought to get flushed.

Lady Gaga is pretty trashy. She looks like a walking herpe sore.

because of white privilege, we get our own cute name for our trash.... we're uppity like that.

but as i see, a rose by any other name is still a rose.... if you're speaking about trashy folks, call em what you will, but they are still trash.

Exactly. There are sorry human beings in every group.

Never liked the term white trash, or the N word.

I was as white trash, as white trash gets when I was young. I actually lived on the streets for a few years at the ages of 11-13

Almost any young person is a mentor away from becoming a better person.

If I were you I'd be more concerned about the fact that you've still got classmates than about what their mums and dads are doing ;)
