Glenn Beck signs 5-year $100 million radio deal

Seems like a good business investment for these people. I do not know why it is in news of the weird.
 
I put it in news of the weird because for me, a guy like Beck making 20 million dollars a year means the world must be close to ending due to extreme weirdness.

The fact that he can be "worth" that kind of money to somebody is petrifyingly frightening.

Well, I mean, my personal opinion on pundits like Beck are not very high at all. I see them as they are right now a harm more than a good. However, the man has many followers and in doing this your product gets put out to more people.
 
Glenn Beck has the right to earn as much as the market will bare, yes?

If Hollywood folks can make $20+million per movie then I got no problem with Beck earning that amount in a year.
 
Based on the value he provides to society, he would be grossly overpaid at minimum wage.

He does have the right to earn whatever the market will bare, just like everyone else.

I said that based on the value he provides to society, he would be grossly overpaid at minimum wage. Sorry. I estimated his value twice what he is worth.

Evidently monied people, those paying Beck, differ with you. And I think they wouldn't be giving him this amount of money without believing they'll earn it and more back. There must be a good market for Beck, excluding you of course.

In a world with people like Paris Hilton and the Kardashians, nothing surprises me anymore. I could look up and see a comet the size of Manhattan, hurtling toward me at 100 miles an hour, and it wouldn't phase me as much as it would have, say, 10 years ago. Society has become so much more accepting of complete idiots.

Value to society is not the same as market value, which is what the people paying him are going on. You can still see the market value from a business standpoint and think the guy is a nut. And no one is suggesting Beck has no right to get paid for what he does if people want to pay him for it, just that they have a low opinion of the man.

Stop the strawman, you're arguing against a position no one here has put foward.

Topic is Beck earning money, yes?

I'm saying Beck has the right to earn and all those that dislike/hate have the right to not listen. Sounds like a simple answer to the problem.
 
How much does Rachel Maddow make, and does it rankle anybody's feathers the same way?

I imagine if Charles Manson was allowed to broadcast a radio show, countless people would listen. That doesn't mean he isn't a nut.
 
I'm not surprised that they hired him. Like him or hate him, the guy has a lot of devoted fans, and will bring a lot of listeners in.

I am a bit surprised by how much he's being paid. I didn't realize anyone in radio anywhere made that kind of money.

That can be said of most of the stars in Hollywood.

And if you want to use that measure Glen Beck may not be paid 20 mil a year but it is likely that he would be paid more than anyone else here at DP.

i tend to disagree. both are entertainers who sell confirmation bias. they aren't journalists.

as for "legitimacy," Beck seems to lose that battle due his to nonsensical conspiracy theory, but neither is really in contention for a label of legitimate journalist. the fact that either can command large sums of money says more about us, our intellectual curiosity, and our willingness to challenge our own views.

as for the upside, i hear Beck treats his employees very well, and i would expect that Maddow does the same if her position entails managerial duties.
