This was mentioned in discussion in a topically different thread the other day, which I thought deserved some attention of its own.

Are there more libertarian men than libertarian women in real life or not?

Why do you think that is or isn't?

Is there currently change afoot in the direction of libertarian gender participation?

By libertarian, that includes "libertarian", "libertarian-left" and "libertarian-right".

men tend to be more confident in their abilities to take care of themselves - and women (especially single women) tend to be more likely to see government as a means of external support. There is a reason why Julia apparently never weds.

I suspect it is dominated by men. Males tend to be far more selfish and far more cutthroat and far more cynically cruel than women are. And those qualities are found in abundance in the right libertarian self imposed belief system.

So here's a question then: if there are more men than women libertarians then is there a word like "libertarian" only the opposite meaning that applies to what women might be more likely to embrace?

I had been using the term "securitarian" where security's an absolute priority as the opposite to libertarian where freedom's an absolute priority .. and then I made up the word "justicerian" to keep the "liberty and justice" terms at the same meaning level.

But I'm wondering if there's already a more common term to describe the opposite of libertarian.

I don't actually know the demographics. I looked around and didn't find much. I think there was some CATO thing from 2006 which had it at 57% male 43% female.

It's a tough one.

Men are more selfish, egotistical, and insecure, and far more likely to feel the need to rationalize their own blind luck and habits of lying and cheating.

Women are more pious, and the libertarian movement, after all, is nothing but an especially nasty religion.

I couldn't find anything either that presented statistically.

I did find a number of links that asked why there are so many more men than women libertarians and how we can get more women to become libertarian.

But my real-life experience is that there are a far greater number of male libertarians than female libertarians, way more than the 57 - 43 percent ratio, but that the number of women was beginning to gain due to a number of sociological factors.

Well it's great that a few partisan hacks can come in here to throw their hatred around. I suppose it's a bit standard these days.

A thinking human being with a functioning heart.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are more male libertarians than female, as (imo) females tend to be more group-minded and dependent on social groups for their sense of well-being and self-esteem.

Haha- so untrue. Don't know what you've been smoking, but you don't have very keen observational skills.

Does that imply that libertarianism is more of a "lone wolf" ideology .. or have I gone too far here?

Personally, I don't think you've gone too far. It's closer to a lone wolf ideology than a sheep pasture ideology. It's an ideology which fits people who find no security in the pack, and do not fear traveling their own path.

Not 100% sure. On a political platform level there is a lot more request for less government and being able to take care of one's self; so maybe. But it's not like an ideology where everyone wants to isolate themselves from other people and live alone in the woods.

Don't smoke. This is based on a very long time on the planet.

I think it's based more on emulation of Navy Pride's debate style.

That's interesting, as I have a similar take on it.

To me, the libertarian emphasis on both social and economic freedom is historically male, as men were the ones that go out into the dog-eat-dog competitive world to fight to bring home the money or the kill. To be successful at that requires the freedom to employ any means possible.

Women, on the other hand, have historicaly found an emphasis on both social and economic security essential to "nest" safety and raising and caring for kids.

Today, what with the high divorce rate, and a ton of single moms out there in the dog-eat-dog competitive world, more women are embracing libertarianism, though it remains mostly a male bastion.

And here is another comparison .. going out in the world to fight tooth and nail requires a lot of thinking, and those who try to feel their way through the process can become the prey, whereas raising children creates a feeling bond between mother and child that functions in a positive way toward child development .. and this has been shown statistically that 60-40 women are more feelers than thinkers with men more thinkers than feelers by the same ratio, with this aspect of psychological temperament typing being the only one of the four components that shows a distinct gender-preference. Libertarianism is clearly more of a thinker's ideology, with the opposite, I would contend, more of a feeler's ideology.

my my, such hostility

I think the liberatarian parties need to put forward a more mature and rounded effort before many people - man or woman - can remotely consider to take them seriously.

At present most members who flirt with the parties or just libertarian views in general seem to want mostly legalization of drugs, prostitution and other such non-political ventures all the while wanting the government to just move aside and let powers of corruption take over in all ways.

When they remotely suggest any such political views or stances it hardly goes to address any serious issues in a fashion aimed at some sort of resolution - but merely to pacify the individual and just leave the yardy.

Considering their mash of weak stances with a snide nose towards any sort of regulation or taxation they have a long way to go. They seem to only want to be left alone - leave people alone - and just hope the rest of the world follows suit.

So who plies to such social arguments more? I hardly think *that's* worth discussing.

There are a few noteworthy libertarian minded individuals. Some that I respect quite highly. While interesting, philosophical and solid on their own: I hardly think a few garner an entire nation's support and allegiance.

So which one is it: the government or men that we're suppose to be reliant on?

You either have the women relying (willingly) on government - or the women relying (willingly) on their conservative male figure.

Would be nice if the conservative males around here felt that women, too, should be reliant on their selves and no one else.

Women need more socialized help than men do, especially when having children out of wedlock. Men generally do better without substantial financial or emotional support. Essentially, women are needier and, by and large, expect their needs to be met by society. Sexist, perhaps, but none-the-less true.

Frankly, there’s nothing immature about desiring a society free from government interference and regulation of minutia in one’s life.

Those are the things you hear about, but certainly not the only issues, but they are the only issues that the media and other party reps want out there. If you fear corruption, you need look no further than our government itself.

That is most likely because we don’t generally view government as a solution to problems.

Unfortunately, the masses can’t handle living in a libertarian society anymore, so I wouldn’t expect national support nor allegiance.
