So my wife showed me a picture on her phone that said in the caption, "Someday I hope to be able to afford an iPhone like the woman using food stamps in front of me." Before I was married I actually thought the same thing. This is something that to me, shows the glaring inefficiencies in our current welfare system as these abuses happen constantly. I wouldn't go so far as to say it is very prevalent though. In my experience the woman was using an iPhone, wearing brand new Nikes, obviously just got her hair done, and here I am with my wife (fiance at the time) behind her with holes in my shoes, no cell phone, and working 60 hours a week and still can't keep up. I'm well paid and since, we both have all kinds of useless crap but my point is, is we worked for it. This woman did not.

I will say, that if we close these gaps it needs to be from top to bottom. Social and corporate welfare reform is greatly needed. Something I do not see our current president doing as his legacy will be defined by getting the healthcare act through and keeping us on top. What say you people?

food stamps and iphone, reminds me of all those people on welfare who have more money invested in their car than i do on all my posessions.i think its time all social programs have better checks and balances.

Surprise surprise two white southern boys agreeing with each other about the black welfare problem.

:baby1

I mean c'mon guys you're making the rest of us look bad. The whole complaining about welfare queens schtick is sooooo 80's.

Hmm, I wonder what circumstances could lead someone to make purchases and then later have a reduction in income making them eligible for social safety nets.

I also wonder if circumstances like that have become increasingly common over the last few years.

This woman did not.

And on what, exactly, are you basing that? In a brief encounter, all you have to go by is what they look like. Just sayin.

P.S. Most people on welfare and food stamps have jobs.

LOL

Yep, I would agree that it's absolutely ridiculous. Sure there are too many people out there scamming the food stamp system, but that is the tiny minority.

I may be southern and white, but it is not a race thing for me. I know plenty of whites on welfare and blacks that work hard at low paying jobs to survive instead of taking welfare. It is not about the "black welfare problem". It is about how much the government spends on welfare programs and the fact that many on welfare live better than people who work.

Government Spending Details: Federal State Local for 2012 - Charts

The welfare budget lists as $679.2 billion for 2012.
Add in the $367.3 billion from healthcare identified as going to welfare. You get $1055.5 billion being spent on welfare. That is a significant amount of money.

Now consider Demographics of the United States | Statistic Brain
You see that those drawing those benefits and that money is only around 14% of the population (personally, I don't particularly care for this chart, but it is the only one I found without searching through lots and lots of pages, I think at least some of the benefits are going to some of the "working class", but then, they may not). That is a lot of money with a rather small percentage of the population benefitting from it.

Another stats page: Welfare Statistics | Statistic Brain

40 states where welfare pays better than an $8 an hour job, and that is better than minimum wage.
7 states where welfare pays better than a $12 an hour job, that to me is utterly rediculous.
9 states where welfare pays better than the average teacher in the US.

Why in the world would people in these states ever take the time to get educated or seek jobs when welfare pays so well? Welfare should never pay or grant more benefits than actually working. It should only be a helping hand when needed, not a life style choice. It does however encourage me that so few do take that route when economically, many would be better off switching to welfare. Unfortunately, there are those who do chose that path, and the numbers are growing. We may be back to the numbers in the 1980s (I searched, but so far have not found any data for during the Obama administration other than budgeting data). It may be, as you say, "sooooooo 80's", but the amount of money spent on it and the number of people who get it makes it a very current problem.

i intentionally put the west virginia thing up there just so people wouldnt say its an attack against black people.

No, just an attack against black people AND people from West Virginia. Really winning yourself some points there.

you don't know anything about that woman in reality. anecdotal evidence is just that.

Anecdotal assumptions based on appearance. Not anecdotal evidence.

kinda funny though welfare people get more money than i did working 40+ hours a week in a trained profession.

btw those who keep claiming attacking welfare is going against black people please show the studies that say black people heavily outnumber white people on welfare.

Iphones are free with certain cell phone plans.....just sayin'.

Welfare Statistics | Statistic Brain

40 states where welfare pays better than an $8 an hour job, and that is better than minimum wage.

Implies that no one on welfare is capable of getting a job above minimum wage, and doesn't acknowledge the need of more money for people with families.

7 states where welfare pays better than a $12 an hour job

Which 7 states are they, and what is the average hourly wage there? What is the cost of living?

9 states where welfare pays better than the average teacher in the US.

What is the average pay for teachers in each of those 9 states, and how does it compare to what a person can make on welfare?

I encourage you not to blindly copy and paste info compiled for you by the CATO Institute and try to understand what the numbers mean in context.

BTW, it's a shame that people are against food and nutrition programs and unemployment insurance. It's a good thing most of us aren't.

im not against food stamps or unemployment,or even welfare checks,im just against abuse of the system.

most states use debit cards for food stamps now,and i have physically seen people use them for purchasing liquor electronics cigarettes etc, like here in texas the government doesnt scan though every purchase to make sure you dont buy what your not supposed to,its up the the stores that agree to accept and abide by food stamp rules to enforce it,which especially around where i live no one really does.

People on welfare should be randomly audited for this sort of reason.

Posting a picture of a crowd of black people with the caption "Welfare state" is attacking black people. It's just a crowd of people. Maybe there's a parade.

No, they really shouldn't.

Maybe she was a prostitute and needed the iphone for business purposes.

But I got your point. Sucessful business people like her shouldn't be drawing foodstamps. I actually think no one should get foodstamps, ever.

No, they really shouldn't.

first there i couldnt find a picture with other races on it on google.

second you say we shouldnt audit them, that abuse is ok why?because you party wins their votes???

i read once that the tooth brush was actually invented by a west virginian
if it had been invented anywhere else we would refer to it as a teeth brush

back on topic,
what is the solution to the disproportionate allocation of welfare?

I have no idea what your job is, but you could possibly be a social worker based upon that statement (low pay, trained professional). Wouldn't it be a hoot if your job was signing people up for welfare? I'd fall on the floor and roll over laughing (at the system - not you).

I didn't say abuse was ok. I said we shouldn't randomly audit them for this reason. Stop making things up.

Also, it doesn't matter what other pictures you could find. Posting one racist picture and then posting a picture with other races involved doesn't make the first image suddenly not racist.

We shouldn't randomly audit people for this reason because you have no idea why or how that woman has an iphone. Older iphones are cheap or even free with a cell phone plan. Maybe she used to make $50k a year and bought the phone before she lost her job during the recession. Maybe it was a gift from a friend. It doesn't matter. Welfare and food stamp fraud are nowhere near as widespread as you think they are. Fraud prevention measures already exist. Most states actually do audit receipts from EBT cards looking for things like liquor.

Food stamps are one of the most efficient methods of economic stimulus. For every dollar spent on food stamps, more than a dollar comes back into the economy. Most people on welfare and food stamps have a job. The welfare queen is a myth.

i read once that the tooth brush was actually invented by a west virginian
if it had been invented anywhere else we would refer to it as a teeth brush

back on topic,
what is the solution to the disproportionate allocation of welfare?

Well, I'm not sure that ever was the topic, but what makes you say allocation of welfare is "disproportionate?"

edit: Also, teeth brush sounds weird. I might start using it.
