The 10 Poorest States Are "red" States

These states are largely rural, which is a better indicator of poverty than "redness".

I do not know that North Carolina can be considered a red state. One US senator is Democrat and one is Republican and our governor is a Democrat.

All but two of them are "right to work" states. I don't know how much (if any) relevance this has, I just thought I'd point it out.

Minimal at best considering the levels of private sector unionization. A good example is Boeing. Starting salary at their new non-union SC plant, whenever they actually get it running, will be $14/hr. Starting salary in the unionized Washington plant, $15/hr. Same benefits package, same safety regulations.

The same mistakes some conservatives make when they do this kind of stupid crap. First and most obviously, can you show that the reason they are poor is because they are red states? If not, then what is your point?

They are poor because they're "red"?

They're "red" because they're poor?

All poor people are "red"?

All "red" people are poor?

What IS your point?

Consider the originator of this thread. Of course there is no coherent point.

Both WV Senators are (D). The guv is (D) The Reps are generally split. WV would have voted for Hillary. But yeah, COL is quite low.

I bet it is a little easier to be poor (really poor) in warmer climates.

yeah, they went with "who do they vote for in a presidential election" for determining "red state" - ness. not "who are they actually governed by".

Alabama, for example, had a Democratic legislature from the late 19th Century through 2010. many of the other states are the same way.

he was trying to argue that they are poor because they are republican. unfortunately, it's an argument rather in search of facts rather than the other way 'round.

there are plenty of differences between the states. in the last decade, for example, right to work states added jobs, while non right to work states lost them. states with high levels of illegal immigration have suffered burdensome costs that the others have not. etc. but whether or not they traditionally vote republican or democrat for president really isn't one of those dividing lines.

I see Texas the reddest state of them all isn't on the list.

We do have a fairly high poverty rate. I think we are leading the nation in increases right now on that. Have the highest rate of uninsured and also have a really crappy education system.

OTOH the 11th richest city in the nation is also in Texas.

Nine out of ten are also in the South, so maybe it is just the South. Dun dun dun.

Every few months someone posts a "most of the dumbest/poorest/fattest/some negative attribute people come from red/blue states" thread. It is always a partisan hack thread, never demonstrates anything other than correlation, never has anything to do with political part, and can always be dismissed as meaningless.

Haha I'm not originally from the South so I myself have my own biases about the South. I'm originally from Pennsylvania and seeing the much larger minority population down here I can't help but wonder if that has something to do with why southern states have higher rates of poverty, because of all the intolerance.

Isn't PA where all the kids are drunk on hard cider?:2razz:

Well I am from Bahston and lived in SC for far too long, so I know where you are coming from by this. HOWEVER, in my recent two weeks living in a rather lower income place around DC I can tell you the food these people eat is terrible.

Meh I grew up in HP but also lived in Ft Greene Brooklyn when I went to college

There is poverty everywhere, but the higher the minority population the more poverty there is going to be in that area statistically. The South is basically one big "hood". We act like everyone is equal in this country regardless of race, but we're lying to ourselves. Poverty breeds poverty that's all there is to it, if someone is raised in a bad situation, most of the time they will end up in a bad situation as well.
