People who have read my posts know I support authorities and the police. I have a number of friends that are police officers as well as elected County Sheriffs with whom I am on a first name basis, but his is ridiculous and clearly an overzealous Cop who might need to be drug tested because they can bring on paranoia, and he seems to qualify.

Clear overstep. Oversight of the police is essential to our continued freedoms -- it's why police reports are public record. This is wrong ...

... but I can't say I'm surprised. Our justice system has some real failings that don't seem to get much attention.

Blame the legislatures that are passing laws against it. The police are only enforcing the laws we've told them to.

would love to be in the courtroom to hear the cop explain to the judge how she threatened him by her presence

hope she has hired the junk yard dog attorney in her town to realize a monetary settlement

This is not an isolated incident. He was not just on drugs or overzealous. He has the full support of his corrupt brothers.

Petty Thuggishness in Rochester | The Agitator

The video below is from a Rochester, New York, neighborhood meeting in support of Emily Good, the woman arrested for videotaping a traffic stop from her front yard. So Rochester police sent four squad cars to ticket the cars of meeting attendees who parked more than 12 inches from the curb. Yes, they even brought a ruler.

That’s some staggering vindictiveness, officers.

By the way, due to a $50 million budget shortfall, the city of Rochester is considering cutting 27 full-time police positions. If the the cops in Rochester have time to carry out petty grudges against citizens who dare to show support for a woman who was illegally arrested, maybe the city ought to consider cutting 40 or 50 positions instead. They could start with the cops in this video.

Public servants, operating in public, should not be protected from being filmed doing their job. Especially if it will keep them more honest.

I oppose these kinds of laws, against people filming cops doing their job. If they can film us.... we can film them.

Completely unacceptable behavior by the police officers who arrested the woman, and by the police officers engaged in the retaliation ticketing outside the woman's house when a meeting was being held about the incident.

There have been many such stories recently. It seems when fought they are dismissed. At some point this has to reach the higher courts at which point it will be stopped.

Don't hold your breath.

It cannot happen soon enough. Goshin hit one out of the park. This has more to do with keeping power honest. Yes it's a pain in the ass for the police and yes this will cause fraudulent cases where the city or police force will be sued - but that's the way it is in a free society. The police do not have this power and if the legislature gave them this power, it was not the legislatures to give. It's as clear of an abuse of power that there is...

I imagine that not much will come of it. She disobeyed a police order. Now it is ridiculous that she made him feel unsafe, but in a residential neighborhood police can be quickly outnumbered and threatened by a neighborhood mob. I can't see the State's Attouney taking this case to court though. It's a total waste of State resources.

Well that's a strawman --- yes, police can be threatened by a mob, however one woman with a camera usually isn't defined as a mob. I agree I doubt the State Attorney will take the case either - however, I'm hoping some adventurous lawyers wanting to make a name for themselves maybe with the ACLU would sue the police force/city/state and get this idiocy front and center; more to send a message to the legislature that such behavior on side of the police is not acceptable.

I agree. The cop made things worse by arresting her. He's lucky that didn't cause an angry mob right there on the spot. Now there is an angry mob all talking about it. Still, good luck finding a judge that won't blindly give the benefit of the doubt to the cop.

Yeah - it went too far. . . I agree with the ladies at the end of the video - the cops were pissed that she filmed them ****ing up.

But damn people - when a cop tells you to 'go inside' or 'leave the scene' you need to do what they say. Holy **** - how dense ARE people? Haven't we learned this lesson? How many countless cases have we seen where a minor - no big deal - issue happens and then it escalates and gets way out of hand BECAUSE people refuse to listen ot the advise or suggestion of an officer?

"put down your weapon"
"step away from the body"
"please leave the scene - go inside"

Holy crap people - every time a citizen seems 'arrested for no reason' in part it's because they're arguing with cops. . . and these 3 things are from cases in the last few month swehre no one was murdered, no one committed a blatant crime - but in the end they were arrested because they didn't DO what they were told ot DO.

I wonder how many people in similar situations such as the ones we've seen recently who DO listen and - OMG!! they DON'T get arrested! I have a suspicion that more people avoid arrest by doing what they're told - no harm done *to anyone*

Most times I agree with that - do what the cop says. In this case however, I disagree. We are guaranteed freedoms... cops because they do not like being filmed do not have the right to arrest someone because they do not like being filmed. Yes, if people are too close to a crime scene, if there is a credible threat of a mob, or if there is inciting language, threats... all justified actions by the police to keep themselves and other citizens around them safe is paramount. A woman filming a cop does not apply... Because a cop tells you to bend over backwards and kiss your own ass on a public street doesn't mean you do it.

Unless your yard is a crime scene or the cops are undercover officers where filming their faces might result a risk of harm to the cops or others, I cant fathom where the rights of the law abiding citizen (again...in their own yard) can or ought to be allowed to be overturned by a cop that doesnt like the fact he or she is being filmed.

Well - she wouldn't have been arrested.

Look: I favor not being arrested more than I favor being stubborn or right . . . and I can be one hell of a stubborn bitch and I love being right. But argue with a cop? Even when he's out of line and I'm not? NOPE - I have no desire to throw away a single moment being carted off to jail for any reason - EVER.

I guess it's all a matter of priorities.

This is true. That's why it won't go to the Supreme Court. ;)

That still doesn't give justice to the people incarcerated and had to bond out or appear before a judge to get a PR bond.

No it doesn't and it's indeed sad that these charges are still being made even though they know they won't stick when fought. Unfortunately, they are being paid to be in court while you are paying for being in court.

I also hope someone forces one of these cases soon. I say that as someone who supports the police in the vast majority of cases. You can't tell someone on their own property or in their own car that they can not film an officer writing a ticket.

An officer should have absolutely no concern here.

Sometimes and some people feel principles are important enough to sacrifice their freedom for a short while. It takes courage to stand up to authority on principle and it's not done enough IMO.

So just submit and willfully surrender all of your rights or they are justified in violating your rights? Why should you blindly follow the orders of police? I am sorry but that's horrible advice.

This woman was videotaping because she apparently was concerned about the fellows rights being violated. A black women claiming police brutality is usually ignored but white people will treat a videotape as actual proof. Too many people are so quick to take the side of the cops but they misbehave and police brutality is quite common. That sort of attitude only encourages misbehavior among police as their victims are routinely ignored and told to just submit.

Like I said: priorities . . . I have the priority of sleeping in my own bed at night, not in a jail cell when I haven't done anything wrong.

Go ahead and sit in the back of the bus then. You don't have to stand up, but there is no reason to place blame on those that have more courage than you.

Some people think it's more important not to sit idly by and watch one of their neighbors being violated. Apparently, they don't sleep well with that knowledge. But if you can sleep through it, go ahead.
