The "Noose" on Golfweek Mag. Cover

In case you don't know a woman commentator on the golf channel said something like "the other golfers ought to take him (Tiger Woods) in an alley and lynch him." She immediatley apologized and Mr. Woods forgave. A couple weeks later Gofweek Magazines after thinking it over publishes this cover. Is this freedom of expression or the press or insighting anger in the name of profit ie., yellow journalism?

I am an avid golfer and know a little of this story. She said something to the affect that the only way these other guys on the tour could win is if they were to take Tiger Woods in a back alley and lynch him. I believe it was meant more along the lines of a testament to Tigers domination of golf. Terribly worded though. But she apologized and Tiger accepted. It should have been over then, but I believe the sharks that make their living off this stuff(Sharpton and/or Jackson) have stuck their noses into this which is of course going to make everything worse.

Now, the editor has been fired over this.... I swear to God, people get WAY too offended nowadays....

If Tiger Woods was okay with the whole incident, shouldn't everybody else?

I just don't understand how so many people live their lives in a state of perpetual outrage. It's like...some people aren't happy unless there is something to bitch about so they create issues where there are none.

Things like this detract from the legitimacy of real racial problems.

I think this magazine showed some poor taste.

Lets remember here. The original comment was made by a golf channel announcer. As I stated before, I think her intent on what she said wasn't meant to be racist, but rather just a poorly worded testament to Tiger Woods domination of the PGA tour. She apologized and he accepted, and that should have been the end of it.

Now I believe that one of the race baiters out there, Sharpton or Jackson, caught wind of this and pressured the golf channel to either fire her or suspend her. I believe they suspended her for 2 weeks or something like that. I am unaware of any further complications or issues that may be present.

This magazine, golf week, mentions that the golf channel has no wiggle room and throws a noose on its cover. The womans comment I can forgive or understand, as they were spur of the moment and not really inflammatory, in the correct context. The magazine however, didn't just spur of the moment put a noose on its cover. They had to know it was controversial. I support free speech, so although I think its in poor taste, I don't think this guy should have to lose his job, but if his bosses think so then I can support their decision as well.

Thank God I read Golf Digest.

It certainly makes golf digest appear trivial with nothing better to talk about.

Anyone that watched Gunsmoke, either while growing up or in syndicated reruns, has likely heard of lynchings, which are nearly always portrayed as a hasty mob action to hang an innocent person, in addition to it being without some sort of "administrative" due process.
There were hardly any blacks on gunsmoke.

The classic cinematic pitch forked, medeival witch hunt, anglo european mob scene also comes to mind.

Many people were lynched, and black lynchings are neither my first nor only association with the practice.

Thus, how likely is it that the commentator actually meant it as a black reference rather than a thoughtless generalization and flippant remark?

But known racist Al Dull Ton jumped into the spotlight to bolster a claim that only blacks are strongly associated with lynching, and to challenge the claim that it was an inspired reference to tiger woods being black, and calling for the commentator's dismissal.

Myself and an associate who is black, an intellectual and openly reasonable fellow, have had many conversations.
In a discussion about OJ, he proposed that the first thought that whites had was that OJ was guilty because he was black.
I disagreed and stated that such may have been their second thought, and that their first thought was that she deserved it for marrying a black.
He seemed puzzled, perhaps at the weight of the sentiment, which I had related in a comedic spirit.
What could he say? He supports the black family and shuns race mixing as well.
In other words, returning to the issue, other people are often secondary to one's personal considerations.

I imagine Golf Digest, which is a monthly publication, and had just released their equipment Hotlist for 2008(which ia a yearly standard for them), did not have the time to present a story, or thoughts. I imagine, by the title, Golf Week is a weekly periodical and thus was able to more quickly run a story. I imagine that Golf Digest will run some kind of story in their next issue.

Re: The "Noose" on Golfweek Mag. Cover

I think it's probably both freedom of expression as well as posting possibly offensive images in order to gain readers. Apparently the noose thing has made some kind of large recent resurgance as a symbol of racist. Or perhaps I should say surgance, because I don't ever remember people getting bent out of shape over rope before (then again I was born in 1981, so I haven't seen a whole heck of a lot of racism first hand).

In response to the announcer who made the lynching comment, I'll say this:

Until very recently, it never even occurred to me that a lynching was a racial attack. The first I ever heard the word it was in the context of a "lynch mob" that was chasing after Count Chocula or some such vampiric cartoon character during my Saturday morning cartoon marathon. Later on I discovered George Lynch and the Lynch Mob. Not a bad 80's guitar rock band if you ever get the time. By the time I was in middle school it became common to refer to any kind of beating as a lynching. If one of my friends was pwning me at Madden (video game football for all you geezers), I would find it totally appropriate for them to describe my total destruction as a lynching. I should also point out that I was regularly lynched at Mortal Kombat. Effing stupid Sub Zero.

Anyway, I now know better, but the word still doesn't immediately conjure up a black man hanging from a tree and I can't guarantee that I won't one day recklessly refer to a team gangbang in Gears of War as a lynching.

So, I can understand if the lady didn't mean it the way it came out.
