This thread is amusing. Most people assumed from the OP that he was some over zealous, highly patriotic conservative. Then he makes a comment about Bush screwing over Americans and hugging Osama on a bumper sticker.

Not only does he prove his ignorance, but I won't be surprised to now see the same people who were critical of the OP now agree with his view of the president.

Your post demonstrates exactly what I have known for awhile now, this country has lost it's middle ground. It's assumed that if one is not an unabashed Bush hater, then that somehow equates to giving the president and this administration tacit approval on every issue.

I don't think Bush is evil, nor do I think he is the stupidest man to walk the earth, or that he is Osama's buddy, yet I still disagree with many republican ideologies and would not consider myself a Bush fan.

I know this concept may be hard for you to understand though.

It's easy and natural to be proud of your country. Being social creatures, it is a human function to feel an affinity towards your group.

But being proud is not a particularly distiguishing (or necessarily impressive, IMO) characteristic. After all, the Nazis in general were very proud of their country too. I certainly don't think they were admirable despite that trait.

So I'd like to ask those who have indicated they are proud of America or proud to be an American: Why? Other than the fact that "it's my country" (anyone can say that) why are you proud of America?

Because America is a land of opportunity. There is so much in this country that is available to anyone who wants to acheive it. Even if something is currently unattainable, we have a system that allows for progressive ideas to come to fruition over time. The sky is the limit here, and the only thing that holds you back is yourself. People come to this country in droves, legally and illegally for a reason, and thats because America is that good.

We spill our blood around the world, not only to safeguard our own shores, but to protect people around the world. Our servicemen and women stand guard all around the world, not just selfishly protecting what ours, but protecting others as well. How different would Europe look had we not troops stationed overseas post WWII. What would the Korean peninsula look like, or Japan for that matter had we retreated back to our borders?

I am proud to be an American.
