We have made formal apologies in the past along with monetary compensation in the form of ODA for decades ! What we will not do,however, is bend over backwards and crawl around with our tails between our legs begging for forgivness while our country struggles with an identity crisis brought on by excessive westernization -- since it's our youth who are the future of Japan who could probably care less about what happened sixty years ago. The buck stops with us; the last of Showa era born Japanese. We write our own history and we will not teach about comfort women because it is not our perogative. We will write a proud history of our nation for future generations.

The conditions in which we were forced to live under by accepting non-expansionist policies -- that the League of Nations established of which the United States wasn't a member of at that time--pushed us into a corner. Why was it wrong for us to expand into Manchuria when all of the major western powers had expanded through-out most of asia ?? Your western institutions encouraged crime, murder and rape during both Arrow Affairs through-out China, and then you throw Nanking up like that's suppose to overshadow your own dark history ! You accumulated massive wealth through exploitation and expansionist policies that you bartered and split between your western white powers ! And since the Japanese were non-Anglo and not dominated by western powers you decided to limit our ability to acquire vast mineral resources through-out China. Sure we committed atrocities, but it was war and war is hell, but what makes you any better ?

I have to challenge you on the "atonement" for the unholy barbarous slaughter of humanity itself in Japans terror on the people of China. Japan has atoned for nothing. What small jestures they have made are from outside pressure. China being the most patient nation on earth will resolve the issue with Japan sometime down the road in their own terms as it will certainly embrace Taiwan in to its arms in the not-to-distant future. What they do to Japan will be just I'm sure.

Let's be objective about this.

The so called 'comfort women', are demanding a formal apology and possible compensation from the Japanese government due to the sexual assault that they suffered under the Japanese military during WWII. They are not saying that all Japanese people are war criminals; they want some closure, and recognition of the crimes committed against them.

As for this nonsense about Japan being under the thumb of Anglo interests, nothing could be further from the truth. Japan has many large industries that are global leaders. Your country produces excellent scientists and engineers that are at the cutting edge of technology and science. The rest of the world rates Japanese products very highly (just look at US non-SUV car sales, etc). Therefore your claims of Western domination doe not reflect the reality.

Secondly I would like to point out that as an Australian, I see Japan as fundemental ally in Asia, along with South Korea and India. Since Japan is a liberal democracy and market based economy, I see Japan as a VERY IMPORTANT ally in making sure that communist China or North Korea are contained. To me a threat against Japan, by North Korea or China, is a direct threat against Australia. I do not differentiate the target of aggression by authoritarian regimes..... What many of the fellow posters on this site are asking, is that your government stops denying the past facts, and just apologise. You'd be amazed by what it can do.

In the long run, Japan, India, U.S.A, and Australia are logical allies against communist China and North Korea. Even though we are culturally diverse, as democracies we share so much more. But this requires compromise, and the compromise is to stop the denial, and accept the past wrongs and move on. Burrying it in the sand is not a mode of dealing with past issues.....

You can believe in your ultra nationalistic/isolationist stance, but even you know that if China, or North Korea threatens Japan, you will need the help of the U.S.A and India....
