Shepherd's Pie.

My grandma always served it when I was growing up and it was one of my favorites. Her cook made it with ground beef rather than lamb though.

the version i've had was made with mashed potatoes, corn, and ground beef.

We had it with beef sometimes, but I prefer it with lamb or even with mutton. It has more taste and tends to be more glutinous.

I'd much prefer to have meat loaf, with mashed potatoes and corn on the side. With gravy for the mashed potatoes.

Cooking it all together doesn't really do it for me.

If you do it that way then you don't get the lovely crust on the potatoes.

For sure corn not peas and carrots in mine, and put cheddar over the top. I noticed Gordon Ramsey reaming someone for using beef but in America it almost always is the meat in this dish, we dont eat much lamb, only a half pound per person PER YEAR, though I eat a lot more of it.

Yes, but we often call them casseroles.

Two cans of green beans mixed with one can tomato soup- layer one
browned ground beef- layer two
cooked mashed potatoes on top
Bake at 350 covered for 30 minutes.
Fast, easy all will love it

I love hot pub food like that--goes especially well with a pint of something and a rainy day. There is, or at least was last I knew, an English pub and restaurant in Santa Monica called the King's Head, and they had all the standard dishes on the menu. Good, too.

I make it usually with ground beef, occasionally combined beef and pork. Specially seasoned and prepared mashed potatoes top the seasoned browned beef cooked briefly with shredded carrots, chopped onion, broth or beef stock, a bit of flour to thicken, worchestershire sauce, salt , pepper, and sometimes a handful or so of frozen peas. Shake some smoked paprika on top of the potatoes and broil until potatoes are nicely browned. Add a bit of fresh parsley for garnish and serve. Luscious.

Do they have shepherd's pie in the States? It's Keith Richard's favourite meal and I'm very partial to it.

We have it in the states, but it is a far cry from what would be traditional, usually ground beef with mashed potatoes with corn peas and carrots, the veggies can be 1 or all depending on who makes it.

In the army we got served it alot. they would have taco night, whatever was leftover was recycled the next dinner for sheperds pie.

that is due to texas cattle farming starting in the 1880's, with it's wide range of grassland, mass cattle farming made for cheap beef, whereas prior goat and sheep were the preferred meats, with cattle rarely being eaten and instead being used for things like plows.

Also the whole buffalo thing might have accelerated it, once you taste buffalo and it goes nearly extinct, you find the next closest thing.

We usually go with ground beef, corn and mashed potatoes..

I do different spice blends though. One night, curry. Another night a Moroccan blend. One time I broke out the Chorrizo spices.

I don't know why we didn't think to ranch buffalo earlier. I mean Bison. Bison has a much better taste to it I think

That's actually a nice idea. I can see that working well with taco meat, even though not traditional.

Maybe this makes me a yank bastard for Americanizing the dish... but I like to add some breakfast pork sausage to my ground beef, and I also add in a bit of cream cheese into my mashed potatoes.

The problem is thinking of sides to go with it. Sheppard's pie already has meat, potatoes, veggies, and cheese.
