Ideally for me ...

Fresh organic vegetables and fruit (I live close to farmers markets and WF so this is easy for me to have access)
Grains - whole wheat organic and sprouted or brown rice organic or various whole grain organic cereals - exception is pastas I prepare pasta that is made with semolina
Nuts --- raw cashews - walnuts - almonds
beans and legumes
Meat once a week --- authentic free anne and organic --- I know the supplier in my city
Dairy - organic milk - eggs and cheeses - yogurts - ice cream

I try to avoid processed food - corporate food for profit that is chemically laced and uber processed - fried food - fast food

When I am in a restaurant or cafe I make the best choices on the menu that I will enjoy and might veer from my base plan above. Once or twice a year I end up with my only choice being fast food and I just try my best to make a good choice that does not disgust me.

Alcohol --- once a week a glass of wine with food and once a week I have a vodka martini when meeting up with a friend.

This is how I feel best --- I personally do not think diets that cut out a complete food group work well for most people and cause binges or re imbalanced.

What works for you?

Lots of vegetables, salads, cheeses and meats. Relatively few carbohydrates. Alcohol on occasion.

Sodium restriction - 2000mg/day

I don't have any other restrictions, so I can eat pretty much anything I want...except for the salt. But damn...salt is in almost EVERYTHING!!

Produce is good. Fruits and veggies. Sausage or any other cured meats are pretty much out unless I compensate in other meals. I really miss sausage/bacon and eggs and pizza. Any foods that are processed, boxed, canned, frozen, etc., I have to check for sodium content.

But it's not really all that bad. Just takes awareness and math. For example, I can have spaghetti but I buy low-salt tomatoes, sauce, etc. Hamburger is relatively low in sodium. Pasta is zero sodium. I can have a big plate of the stuff, a salad w/homemade dressing and keep it aroun 500-700mg's of sodium for my serving.

Lots of red meats and plenty of hops

That used to be me as well. Well, not specifically red meat, just meat. Chicken, pork, all the food groups.

Now I eat a lot more veggies, less starch, and a little less red meat.

I avoid carbs, and consume a very low volume of them.

Specifically, I don't eat cake, cookies, or donuts.
I don't eat rice, noodles, or potatoes.

I do not consume potato chips or corn chips.

I DO eat lots of lean meats and fresh vegetables.
I LOVE grilled steak.
And chicken.
And pork chops.

And I eat eggs, cheese, and ranch dressing.

I do lots of fresh vegetable stir-fries (with olive oil) from my garden.

The long pole in the tent, in all this low-carb business, was beer.
I used to drink really dark, high-calorie, high-carb beers.

Now I drink Michelob Ultra Amber.
Great taste, dark colour, and low-carb.

And I enjoy some red wine whenever I have some steak.

Life is good.
:)

Nope, have never truly believed in diets.

I pretty much eat whatever I want whenever I want... usually start my early morning with two good sized mugs of locally grown and roasted coffee after which I am usually not particularly hungry until 11 or noonish...if I am hungry early I usually make either my patented spag-egg-ghetti which is leftover spaghetti with a little oil in the pan and an egg added, omg good with two or three slices of white toast, no need for butter... and for lunch I might make a grilled cheese with Lays potato chips or peanut butter sandwich or homemade chicken soup with lots of veggies thickened with rice and/or leftover mashed potatoes... also omg good.

Dinner might be a huge salad, almost all locally grown veggies, organic as that is how they almost all do it here... or chicken breasts, or a nice big thick NY strip with mashed potatoes and corn or peas or whatever is handy ....or the aforementioned spaghetti full of fresh mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, garlic and Italian spices...yummy.

Am renovating my house here on the mountain and so my kitchen with nice blue pearl granite counter-top should go in this week, move my new gas stove and freezer into the finished kitchen and will be making up anything and everything from crepes, to breads to custards to ice cream... when the road to the coast is finished I will be about 45 minutes to an hour away from pristine beaches and good fresh fish, lobster and shrimp... cannot wait for that to happen...love good food and love to cook then eat all these oh so delightful things god has provided in such variety for our oh so precious taste-buds. Thank you god. I drink one, two or three cold bottled beers, Balboa being my preference here, when friends drop in or I visit, a few glasses of wine or the wonderful Abuelo rum if I plan to be dancing and going NOWHERE else for the evening...perhaps a time or two a week. Also, maybe the same with cabinical delights if someone is in possession... all of which puts an even more richly rosy tone on everything here in paradise.

And by simply moving from Florida to here, up in the mountains, not being stressed by a teaching job any longer, walking up and down the mountain visiting friends or to go swimming in the three rivers that run through or past my mountain, doing some gardening when and as I see fit...well, I have lost 30 pounds in this last year, my inaugural year here in Panama. I feel not only better but wonderful and, knock on wood, hope to stay feeling that way for the foreseeable future.

Life is truly grand here in paradise... well except for the chitras, so slow or no internet and the too too often occasional power outages.

I eat whatever I want, just not so much as I used to. I went on special diets before to get under my blood test "red flags". Most of my red flags were borderline. It took a lot of change in diet, but I beat the flags, slightly. But I was no way enjoying what I so much enjoy in life. I don't care if I die sooner because I should of had a healthier diet. I want to enjoy my life, what is left of it, however shorter it might be because of that enjoyment. Eating whatever I want (I've hardly ever used salt and mostly use extra light olive oil instead of butter or other oils), but not so much of it. Eat whatever you like, just not too much.

in other words, you grew up.

A. I eat whatever strikes my fancy.
B. I love vegetables and grew up eating mostly vegetables but not for religious reasons.
C. I love red meat.
D. I love pork.
E. I love chicken.
F. Fish

I suppose the only thing i eat that isn't organic is salt. I'm not sure what inorganic cauliflower would be.

Whenever the government comes out with a new warning I do the opposite if it is at all possible. I eat eggs and salt and pork and lots of pasta.

in other words, you grew up.

Nah, I just decided that I wanted to weight 200 lbs, instead of 240.

I had two choices. Give up craft beer, or eat healthier. I went with the lesser evil.

Well it sounds by you healthy food choices you naturally gravitate towards delicious healthy food.

Did you retire as it sounds like you now have autonomy to live and lead the life that is healthy and happy.

well I just poured some wine and wolfed down a half a bag of low sodium chips that I bought for a BBQ on Wednesday...that went down pretty well

NORmally

as much "raw" as I can get down me starting with a smoothie in the morning consisting of half greens, some fruit, nut milk and whatever I top it with such as: spirulina, ground flax seed, chia, hemp hearts

I am basically a sugar addict and refined sugar is likely the worst thing one can put into their body so I try to avoid or at least eat in moderation anything processed such as bread, or packaged goods

I am up and down on meat...right now I am not enjoying it so I use a protein powder and tofu along with nuts and seeds and I am okay with yogurt

I am kind of all over the map but I attempt to keep bad choices to a minimum

Coffee all morning and usually till noon.

I suffer usually till around 5 pm and break out the brew.

But, I don't really do much junk food or sweets.

I love meat and a lot of veggies.

We, you and everyone has their own style of healthy it seems. you sound like you found a good combo for you, I for me.

Yes, I did retire...somewhat early, happily, could not miss the opportunity and am enjoying, savoring practically every moment. I don't know about healthy, but do try to at least assure that most everything that I eat is very good to delicious. I have navel oranges and orange juice amazingly all year around, this last being my first full year here and I witnessed it all of last year. That is actually often my breakfast substituent... so sweet.

Snacking on honey roasted peanuts and good lord they are tasty.

I think if you can live somewhat stress free, exercise enough, over do only occasionally and listen to how your body is reacting, you can, or at least I can, eat just about anything... and my portions down here just somehow grew just as satisfying with less...which helps as well.

for this last year, portion size has been a problem for me

I have to press a little harder with that

I think the temperature, and I have sworn off air conditioning here in the mountains, must be almost perfect for reducing the desire for large American style portions. During the heat of the day its not hot at all, but eating does raise it just enough to cut desire somehow, thats my theory anyhow... plus I've finally accepted that I don't have to eat everything on my plate anymore, my parents aren't paying for it so I can leave it without guilt now.

Besides, 1. I hear there aren't as many starving kids in China as when I was a kid and 2. Leftovers are great, sometimes better the second or third time around,

*sigh*

I am very small boned....I don't look over weight but five pounds off would be really good and 8 would be perfect

I really like my food but bottom line is, if fat is being stored, too much is being consumed

I love food tremendously and like to eat what I want. I found a place where I can pretty much, knock on wood, do that. I first noticed that living at altitude seemed, with the addtion of walking, peel the pounds off me fast when I was in Quito, Ecuador for almost 6 months back in '91. My new friends there all were commenting within weeks of my getting there how much better shape I was in. I hadn't really noticed, I was just enjoying life and walking a lot throughout the old colonial part of the city and back to where I was staying nearer the foot of volcano sloping away, towering over new city and the airport.

Happened here in the mountains of Panama as well. Maybe you just need to find a place that suits your clothes

well then obviously I have to move up in the world

a lot of my problem is also my metabolism...when I was young I could wolf food all day and looked underweight, hell I was underweight

people kept telling me, when you reach 25, okay no, when you reach 30, okay no, when you reach 33,

okay well soon

well many decades later...the soon is here...I wear a pedometer and try for between 60 and 70 thousand a week plus I swim frequently

oink

have to either give up wine (that is never going to happen)

or

cut the portion size

or

quit whining

- no desserts or sweets
- no liquids with calories other than those containing alcohol, milk, vegetable juice
- avoid processed foods
- no snack food in the house

I couple this with running 3-4 times a week, 2.7 or 5.4 miles each time; also, 2-3 full upper body weights workouts per week. Basically I aim for something every day.

Occasional exceptions, such as bacon now and then, grilled italian sausages (from a butcher) now and then, etc. I've actually re-incorporated some snack food like butter popcorn. Why? Well, I decided I wanted to increase the weights on my bars again so I increased my training regimen.....but ended up losing weight without adding any significant muscle. I need more calories and protein, I guess.

Reason for the regime: I want to maintain a high level of fitness and not become overweight for as long as I possibly can.

lots of vegetables ,this kind of falafel salad is one of my favorite ones ,not only is it delicious but also it functions as egg and makes you feel full all day

I track macros. Well, attempt to, anyway. Not a true believer in IIFYM but I'm pretty loose about what I eat within my numbers.
