Crabs - Because They're AWESOME!!!

Then you've got the Alaskans and "you call that dinky little thing a crab"?

Snows and Kings are bigger, but the flavor just isn't there. They are better than blue crab, but they can't hold a candle to dungies. I grew up eating dungies (one of my dad's best friends was a crab fisherman, so he'd come by our place with a few 5 gal. buckets full of crab 2-3 times a year) and they are simply the best crab there is. Great sweet flavor, lot's of meat and readily available.

I don't know if crabs are more disgusting than lobsters, but I lean that way. I was in Maryland and a crab shack and got some buckets.of blue crab with the table. It was a pain in the butt for very little gain and far too reminiscent of high school biology.

I'll just stick to fish.

Why do you feel the need to comment in multiple threads about things you DON'T like???

Do you think we care?

Not really into crabs- takes too much work and effort to get at the meat. However I will make an exception to soft shell crab sandwiches and crab cakes.
Eating crab legs is an art form. You have to have fresh crab legs and they cant have been over boiled. Done right, you dont even need a shell cracker. You should be able to extract an entire crabs leg steaks in just a few minutes.

Ikari is prejudiced against open circulatory systems! :2razz:

(as if closed CS are somehow healthier, when they are really just all the same- you can get sick from CSS too)

Good morning, PoS. :2wave:

I feel the same way about chicken wings! When I have to work so hard for a little bite of chicken, what have I gained - I'm still hungry and now I'm frustrated, too! :lamo

I know. he posted the same BS crap in the lobster thread. All the same people are basically in both threads. We get it. Ikari doesn't like _______.

Why post it over and over and over again? Post count fetish perhaps?

He likes fish, but is he posting in the numerous fish threads around here?

For someone who doesn't care that much, you sure do like to talk about it. I was just playing around, but you seem to take it seriously. That makes it....your problem.

Don't talk about it if you don't care, but you've just dragged out this whole issue by caring enough to respond. Kind of silly of ya, huh?

Blue crab are excellent. Not only do they taste good but if you happen to have need of dumping a body they make short work of the evidence (except the teeth which you'll need to handle separately)
I don't think I even want to speculate upon the source of your knowledge ...

Earle Brockway built these boats for over 40 years. I used to sit and watch him build these on my off days when I was in the Navy in New London Ct. My friend rented a house up the street from Earle in Old Saybrook. The only measurements needed are the stem post angles and the transom. The transom can be cut to have most any desirable side flare you choose. The rest is done by eye.

Fantastic. Please post pics of finished project. Especially if there's a bushel of caught crabs in it. :rock
Yes - a home-built skiff, piloted by a retired navy salt, coming-in up the Chesapeake carrying a bucket of fresh-caught live blue-points, would make for a classic scene of Americana indeed!

As with others here, I always try to give LutherF respect during our times of disagreement.

But perhaps now, I'll give just a bit more respect! :2razz:

Growing up in the Carolina's and spending lots of time at family homes along both NC and SC coasts gave me ample opportunity to go crabbing and fall in love with crabs. We would go fishing in the morning, and after cleaning our catch would use the heads and guts as crab bait. We'd go down to the tidal pools in the marshlands and crab there, by putting a fish head on a long string and throwing it in the water. Eventually we'd feel the string pull, and then we'd slowly pull the fish head toward the bank with the crab holding on to the other end. Once he got close to the bank we'd use a net if he was big, or our hands if he was small and then put him in our 5 gallon bucket. Once the bucket was full, we'd go home and start cooking the fish and the crabs over an open fire out back of the house. We'd also have a frog gig with us while we were crabbing, and we'd usually get a half dozen frogs to add to the dinner menu.

If you've never had it before and you get the chance, try you some Low Country She Crab Soup. Here's a link to a couple recipe's and a brief history behind it: She Crab Soup Recipes and History, How To Make She Crab Soup, partan-bree, Whats Cooking America

I've had blue crabs that were opened and cleaned (risky operation for the novice) prior to cooking.

Then they were basically steamed/cooked in a butter-garlic situation.

Very very good - but I'm still very much a fan of the Old Bay variety of crabs. Cooked whole and picked when eaten.

I thought I had crabs once in college , but it turned out to be jock itch. ;P
