Salmon

I haven't done this yet, but I want to plank salmon on my crappy charcoal grill. If not grilled, I tend to go pan seared with salmon. I love it, but that stuff be expensive. My daughter goes nuts for salmon though, so I got to get it.

Ive doen the plank a few times, its OK but you have to rememebr to soak the plank before hand. Too much thinking ahead for my simple mind ot bother doign it very much.

Basically the plank is just the easier form of smoking correct? Or the cheaper way to turn the grill you already have into a simple smoker?

I think kinda, the cedar (or whatever plank you use) imparts some of its flavour to the salmon. I always thought it was more through the steam than the smoke but meh, it works thats all that counts.
Problem is you have to remember to soak the plank for a long time before using it, something I never think of doing, hence I dont plank that often.

Most people I know that smoke food in a smoker also soak their wood in water. Increases smoke, and takes longer for the wood chips to burn out. Also provides some moisture to the process.

Yeah I have a wood chip smoker for the BBQ. Basically cast iron box you put soaked wood chips in. Low heat as you say.

I'm planning on smoking some salmon this weekend coming up. It's my birthday, so I get what I want.

Pics will happen.
