"Meathooked: The History and Science of Our 2.5-Million-Year Obsession with Meat"

Spent about an hour last night slicing, vacuum-sealing and freezing my homemade bacon last night. There's one large piece that had the grain of the meat running the wrong direction and was getting to be a real pain to slice (even with my meat slicer). So I simply broke it down into manageable size pieces and plan on grinding them into my next batch of hamburger for what should be an awesome meatloaf. Then I ran across my next-door neighbor when I was rolling out the garbage cans and we started talking and ended up swapping some of my smoked pepper-jack cheese for some maple bacon he had made. Tonight, we have our monthly potluck at our home group and I'm going to make macaroni with smoked cheese and diced ham, since I have almost a full ham in the fridge that needs to be eaten.

I fervently hope that you both make it to forty.

I'm 13 years overdue.... CRAP!!! I'd better tell my wife to increase my life insurance policy, since I'm obviously about to die....

I'm 24 years overdue and in perfect health will all my teeth and hair. Vegan generalizations do not apply to real life.

It's too bad that people respond to the OP with, OMG I JUST ATE A TONNE OF MEAT IT WAS SO GOOD! Seriously?

There's a much easier way to counter this.

No culture in the history of the world has ever been vegan. Vegetarian, but not vegan. We have relied on the products of animals since the beginning of time. Even in India, where there are millions upon millions of vegetarians, they drink milk, eat cheese, put butter on everything, etc.

There's no evidence that life long veganism is healthy. Short term maybe, not long term. Every study I have read about people who are vegans their whole lives? The majority of the participants have deficiencies across the board, especially in the B vitamin group. Vegans get their nutrition from exotic products that are shipped from all over the world. Without the global market you would be starving to death.

A lot of modern vegans are in their 20's and early 30's. In other words, they are young. The consequences of their choices haven't been revealed to them yet because they still have the vitality to not realize it. And you know what? The same is true of some meat eaters. If veggies are always your smallest portion, you're going to have some problems.

Rule of thumb? Balance!

I see. You meant most of us in the USA. I live in Belgium. No burger drive throughs here. Most people of my acquaintance eat a healthy and well balanced diet. I cannot comment on the States because I have never been there but an American friend who visits regularly has commented on how small the portions are in restaurants and snack bars compared to the USA.

Yes I guess I should have specified.

We're just trying to maintain that balance. For every "Rah! Rah Veggies!" post, we balance it out with a "Rah! Rah meat!" post. Balance....

I don't have a problem with vegetarians. it's healthier than most diets. And your theories about veganism being a threat to one's health is unfounded.I appreciate your dialog though. thank you

Except the meat lovers don't spam the forums with a bunch of crap because they just can't stand that someone chooses to eat vegetables. In fact all the meat threads I've seen include veggies as part of the meal. There aren't any I've seen advising people to eat just meat.

why not? meat is very good for you, so the more the better

Because sane people realize we are omnivores, meaning that we do and should eat both. Promoting veganism makes about as much sense as promoting pure carnivorism: works for cows and cats, respectively, but not for humans.

MV are you a 1 issue poster or do you have any non vegan related interests?

It's not unfounded. There appear to be plenty of studies on the long term effects of vegan diets. Vegan isn't innately healthier than omnivore diets. That’s really the main point. It can be healthy, but it takes a lot of work and there still may be need for supplements, such as K2. It's not just eating tofu and carrots, there is a lot that goes into making sure that a vegan diet is long term a healthy diet, and there are certain vitamin deficiencies that come with the program. So knowing what to eat and what to supplement are important if one is going to go vegan.

In the end, the healthiest sort of diet is likely a well-balanced omnivore diet.

Why You Should Think Twice About Vegetarian and Vegan Diets

why not? meat is very good for you, so the more the better

Veggies are really good for you, but too much of any one and not enough diversity in others can be bad. Meat is very good for you in it's proper amounts.

Lobbyists, contributions, subsidies, PR, advertising: Beef is what's for dinner because we're well-conditioned
or it tastes pretty darn good.
Going back a bit farther, I believe early man appreciated hunting for food. For those who are believers "the aroma was pleasing to the Lord"...and no lobbyists and advertising involved.
I love veg, but lets face it, a juicy steak now and then...wow.

too many people eat a ton of it every day, instead of "now and then"

In the beginning man picked up a stick and clobbered his opponent and today we still do that. Change is not always good.

lol that salon article inside the secrets of Big Meat lol that sounds like some of that junk mail trying to sell you enlargement pills hehe

it's a salon article to start off with.

yep if I have a steak I pair it with a salad or some other kind of vegetable.
there are people I know that eat little in the way of vegetables and they are primarily
eat meat.

they are perfectly fine and they are in their 40-50's.

Thank you to the wannabe hall monitors.

The answer to this is, so what?

You've decided to live without a balanced diet yourself, why do you expect differently from others?

Dude, give it a rest.

Our however many millions of years of love of meat don't come from the propaganda of any meat industry which has only been around for a second of that time frame.

It comes because meat is AWESOME! Packed full of goodies and tastes good too. Moreover, you feel full when you eat it.

Vegetables? They're okay but they taste like a mouthful of almost nothing, you have to eat more to make yourself feel full, and they give you gas. Just look at all the methane produced by cows. ;)

If you want to eat a meat-free diet...more power to you. Telling us we've been duped all-along by the meat industry? That's a stretch. :coffeepap:

Veganism is the weido of mankind.
