Anyone got any ideas on affordable protein? I'm having trouble getting enough meat into my diet. Partly because I do my workout at night due to my job...so I have a hard time getting in protein at meal times. Plus I have lunch I usually eat a peanut butter sandwich which is pretty cheap. But not enough protein I feel like.

I'm trying to keep my energy up at jujitsu at night and protein does help. Anyone got any ideas on affordable proteins? Especially quick and easy ones. Beef jerky is expensive. Unless I am buying it wrong.

Ps

I do know that hunted meat can be cheap. And I will be getting duck jerky. I just need stuff I can buy on a regular basis.

Get a dehydrator and make your own jerky, terribly cheap because you can use beef, pork, or chicken whatever you can afford.

Tuna fish and canned beans are probably about the cheapest fast proteins.

canned tuna, lots of protien, cheap and easy to fix/eat on a lunch break

Canned Tuna and around here you can get boneless skinless chicken breast for 1.68 a lb on sale. You can boil it and shred it over rice, beans, or chicken salad or just add hot sauce and seasoning and go for it.

You probably need less protein than you think. My guess is you are already getting more than enough.

How Much Protein Do You Need?

Any reputable gym should have a section of whey/soy/synthetic products that are very high in protein.

The maximum amount of protein that most adults can use per day is 0.9 grams per pound of body weight.

Carbs are necessary post workout ... typically a 4-1 or 5-1 ratio of carbs to protein.

Be aware that too much protein can be hard on your kidneys and your liver.

I recently had major surgery of a type that put my protein and albumin levels into unsafe territory. The doctor prescribed an OTC product called BOOST that I was required to drink with meals in the hospital and ordered to continue at home. At first I drank two or three a day and then mostly one supplemented with a high protein diet--lots of beans with corn, cottage cheese, tuna, etc. My next blood test those deficiencies had been erased and all was normal. You can get the product at your local drug store or grocery store.

The drinks are okay but not cheap. Powders are relatively cheap as are eggs in sandwiches or salads. But be careful of your liver and kidneys, if you take a lot of protein.

Tofu & squid can be pretty reasonable value based protein sources, if you like them, and especially if bought from Asian stores.

Also, you may consider having a heart-to-heart talk with the family dog at this time, concerning any behavior issues he or she may be exhibiting, letting it know your need for a cheap protein source, and reminding it that: "It's a dog eat dog world, out there"!

Who knows? It might elicit improved behavior!

Considering the time of year, I'm going to recommend turkey to you - it's one of the cheapest meats you'll find and it's easy to freeze uncooked or cooked and it's great on it's own or in sandwiches or salads or casseroles, etc.

Despite a reputation among some as being a waste of money whey protein is actually one of the cheapest sources. You just have to buy the stuff that's strictly whey, not the kind with added goodies like creatine.

And, as others have pointed out, it's unlikely you're not getting enough protein. Do the numbers. Calculating macros is pretty straight-forward and there's loads of online calculators that can do it for you.

My youngest daughter has a Masters in Nutrition, and she insisted that I drink Ensure on a daily basis because it contains vitamins and minerals your body might not be getting from the food you eat. We don't have Boost in this area yet to my knowledge. Ensure tastes good, and I really do feel better when I drink it! She also has me on a vitamin regimen with extra Vitamin B because we have a family history of not being able to utilize it in normal amounts - it takes lots in my case to get what would be standard for most people, so she has me on Brewers Yeast capsules with extra B12 to help keep my nervous system healthy. So far, so good!

Ensure is a great product too, though Boost has more protein. Ensure has the Omega3s though that Boost doesn't have.

I do a protein shake most mornings with chocolate flavored whey protein that you can get in powder form at any grocery store, peanut butter, and milk, both of which are also high in protein. I add a banana for flavor. It's quick, easy protein.

That sounds like a good option too. Right now, as I said, my protein and albumin levels have returned to normal so I am obviously getting sufficient protein from our regular diet. Now I'm working to get iron levels back to normal and that requires focusing on different stuff. :)

Hunted meat is not cheap. It is actually quite expensive.

Tuna is probably the cheapest meat at $1 per 4 oz. That's all you need per day.

Serious body builders and weightlifters eat a lot of tune either straight out of the can or in tuna/mayo sandwiches.

Ground beef at $5/lb is in second place mostly because you need to buy this by the pound and cook it, which requires additional expense compared with canned tuna.

$5.00 / 16 oz = $1.25 per 4 oz serving -- more than canned tuna.

However tuna is lean protein whereas ground beef has fat in it.

You can make protein shakes out of raw eggs, milk, sugar, and vanilla.

Beans are a good source of Vitamin B if that is what you are lacking.

You can google just about every vitamin and find out what you need to eat if that is what you are missing.

Live close to a Sam's or Costco? Their rotisserie chickens are delicious and cost $4.99. Plenty of protein. No cooking. And would probably feed a body for three days, I'm guessing, combined with your choice of veggies and or carbs.

I like your Franklin quote, btw.

Wow, they haven't been $4.99 at Krogers since the 90's. I usually pay about $7 for them here in Michigan. I just had one for dinner.

You might check out Whey protein at GNC. Make a protein shake. You can really load up with a smoothie. And I'm thinking that a large container might displace a lot of steaks.

And a little smoker. It's all good but you need to really clean all the fat off beef or it's a jaw-muscle workout.
