Anyone here have a decent way to prepare brown rice? I'm trying to eat better and I know brown rice is better for you then regular rice, but it tastes like God hates it. I'm also on the search for good quinoa recipe.

I don't eat a lot of rice but when I d it's either brown rice or wild rice. Try cooking it in chicken stock instead of water.

I just use a rice cooker. It's easy. Sometimes I even throw in half brown rice and half quinoa. I will never boil rice again.

Also - I think eating plain rice is a bit strange. Sticky rice is fine, but what's the point of eating rice with rice? Put a curry, meat or veggies over it.

I prefer the brown and wild rice mixes, or some red rice mixed in as well- it seems to be much more flavorful. My favorite is Reese wild rice, which is a stright wild rice, and expensive as hell, compared to regular rice, but it's got such a good flavor that all it needs is a little butter, salt and pepper.

These are my usuals:

Eating brown (or red) rice is like eating whole wheat pasta- very different taste and it takes awhile to get used to it. When I cook brown rice in my rice cooker I add an extra cup of water otherwise it comes out drier than white rice. If you want to give it flavor use chicken or vegetable broth instead of water when cooking it. Sometimes I like to add chopped corn into the mix. Also its best paired with spicy food like curries, chili, mole sauce or refried beans so it can match the thickness out of it.

I like all types of rice but eat more brown and yellow rice.....I seem to eat more Spanish Rice lately these days.

Some like it hot. :2razz:

Plus, if I want to add taste to white rice.....I serve it up hot, add a little milk and sugar maybe a couple pieces of fruit and I am good to go.

I'm pretty sure when I first went into the service back in the day. When they didn't have Oatmeal for breakfast. A few of us would go with the Hot Rice and a bit of milk and some sugar. Come to think of it I think I was in basic at the time.

I use altons browns recipe for baking brown rice in the oven. It comes out very fluffy every time. I can't cook it on the stove in a pot for the life of me. It comes out awful. When I do it his way it comes out fluffy and very much like white rice but with a nice nutty flavor. You can also throw spices in the pan before you throw it in the oven to add flavor.

Uncles Ben's boil in a bag brown rice isn't bad either as long as you pull the bag and open it and let the rice sit in a bowl and dry off for a minute before plating. The excess water steams off after you pull it fro the water but only if you remove it from the bag like they say to do.

Because it still has the husk brown rice requires more water and longer cook times. Make sure you use enough salt, the cooking liquid should taste about as salty as sea water. Use a stock instead of water and use spices. From watching food network I learned that a mixture of one part turmeric to two parts paprika closely approximates the taste of saffron for a fraction of the cost. I also tend towards cumin and coriander.

Thanks for all the replies my friends. looks like I'm in the market for a rice cooker. Good thing my wife works for Dillard's.

That's the only way I knew to eat rice until I was an adult. Mom never cooked rice for any meal besides breakfast. I still like to have white rice with butter, sugar, and milk, as a treat, sort of like desert at night.

Cook it in chicken broth. Add lots of butter. ha ha, otherwise, reach for quinoa.
