Putting a dairy product in coffee (or tea) is nothing new.

Yeah, sounds like some kind of trendy silliness to me. Apparently grass-fed cows are nothing short of magical.

While I am always in agreement about better living conditions for livestock, and I do actually think well-raised cow and cow products taste better, as something of a coffee purist, I will not be putting slabs of butter in my coffee anytime soon. I seriously doubt it will give me the super powers implied by the article. Buttered toast and coffee never has, so why ruin a perfectly good cup of coffee with something weird?

Wow.

Why Everyone is Suddenly Putting Butter In Their Coffee | Healthy Food House

Anybody tried this? Or ever heard of it?

Is this just some tree hugging, trendy BS thing, or is there something to this?

Latest coffee trend is to put butter in your coffee | Fox News

Yea... It basically sounds like concentrated obesity fuel, as far as I'm concerned.

The article states that not just any butter should be used, but specifically butter made from grass fed cows.

Apparently the fatty acids are different?

Of course if you're already putting sugar and cream in your coffee it's probably not hugely different.

That's my question, does it "ruin" the coffee, or does it taste delicious?

I find that adding good butter to most things makes them more delicious.

So does adding bacon.

Adding those things to beverages, though? Pass.

Dunno. But for me, coffee is about having a consistent, relaxing way to start the day. Personally, I don't mess with a good thing. My day isn't off to a good start if my coffee isn't right.

Magic grass butter... Pfft. Frickin' hipsters...

Give me a minute, and I will give it a try, and get back to you lol.

Depending on how much butter people are using, it shouldn't be highly fattening. A teaspoon of butter only has around 33 calories.

We are talking about real butter rather than margarine, yes?

Yes, me too.

Yes.
Btw, have you tried finding real margarine lately? I usually buy real butter, but I like to keep margarine around too, and about all I can find is spread. Ugh.

Alright, I've decided to give this a try, granted that it is NOT organic. I've made some coffee here..store brand Chock full o' Nuts in a Mister Coffee drip coffee maker. I've put my usual teaspoon of white cane sugar and one half a tablespoon of Land o' Lakes salted butter, room temperature. Now let's give it a taste...

Mmmm not bad. However I would use unsalted next time and only if out of the light cream that I usually use, as I am now. One more sip... Yes it does round down the bitter spikes in this brand of coffee.

General recommendation: Have some fun, try it.

I've noticed that too. Only two brands of old-school stick margarine, Imperial and Bluebonnet, if that. I do buy real butter--sometimes there is no substitute, but I mainly use Healthy Promise. When this product first hit the market, it was beyond icky and melted into water and separated I-don't-know-what, but the one marked "Original" (which isn't) is great for toast, etc.

THanks. That's great to know. Every spread that I have tried makes toast soggy, and I just can't make myself like wet soggy bread.

Butter makes everything delicious. Though as a coffee snob, I would not add it.

It's because of the high water content. Melt margarine and see how it separates. Like nota said, it melts into two different liquids - the margarine and the water.

I love baking with real butter, but I've noticed a difference, even in real butter. My favorite kind is called Challenge. Has a large deer on the front of it, for some reason. Don't really know what a deer has to do with butter. But my local grocer only carries Challenge and Land O'Lakes. Well I've always used Land O'Lakes, until one day they were out, and I grabbed the Challenge. It is so much better, and that's all I use now.

But not in coffee. *shudder* I have to think that it'd make the coffee have a greasy feel to it, like you are drinking coffee out of a dirty cup or something.

I put some in a cup awhile ago, just to see. It's nothing spectacular at all. Not bad, but certainly nothing to get excited about.
All I usually put in coffee is a spoon of demerara cane sugar, unless I'm in New Orleans, then it's real cream. I'm pretty picky about coffee, but I'll try anything just to see.

Yeah, but what type of butter? There's butter :( and then there's BUTTER :)

Add butter poached eggs, crusted root hash cooked in butter, thick sliced bacon, and throw out the coffee. I like where this is going.
