How to fix Pizza Hut

You must be eating in the wrong places :) I agree though that some places use too much sauce or make their pizza way too oily for my taste. I'm also big fan of Sicilian pies (the square ones for those who've never had one).

I was a huge NY pizza snob until I tried a Chicago style pie last time I was in the midwest. Gotta admit the thing was delicious.

I'm a pizza philistine, I love the old Shakey's. Western style pizza. Made a lot of pizzas for dominos. Fresh made dough and the ingredients are real, including the cheese. The only preformed meat is the sausage. The olives and pineapple come from a can, but everything else is fresh, chopped that day. I like that.

Pizza Hut used to be decent back in the 90s, or so, and then they decided to cut their veg way too big, and they weren't cooked all the way through on the pizza. I liked small, diced onions and peppers, and I don't like them raw on a pizza. Nothing worse than biting into a bite of pizza and getting a big, quarter-sized piece of raw onion. I love Pizza Hut's pan pizza crust. To me, a pizza is all about the crust. Anybody can throw meats, veg and cheese on a pizza crust and it be decent, but the crust has to be good. That's why I hate Domino's so much. The crust has about as much flavor as a dishrag. I can tolerate their thin crust, but that's about it, and even then, I only tolerate it if I refuse to cook that night, and don't want to go out.

My favorite is a local place called Fox's. It's down by the marina, and they specialize in gourmet pizza. It's pricey, but holy cow - their Cajun shrimp pizza? Make you wanna slap your momma.

My first pizza ever was at a Shakey's (as well as my first root beer ever) as a toddler. Whats amazing about Shakey's is while they have pretty much died out in the US but they have gotten stronger overseas, there are more foreign locations than local US ones these days.

As far as Dominos, when I first ate them back in the 80's they were crap- their pizza sauce was terrible and they put more of that on their pies than the toppings. I havent tried their revamped menu simply because Pizza Hut is cheaper where I am and if it comes to chain pizzas the cheaper the better for me (since I would go for quantity over quality in those terms).

They are worse. I think when they had this "revamp" several years ago, they just used cheaper ingredients, but told you it was new and improved so you'd rush right out to buy. The 2nd most important part of a pizza is the sauce, and Domino's sauce is wretched. When you have lousy crust, like Dominos, and lousy sauce, like Dominos, you may as well give up.

LOL yeah totally agree, I think of all the big 3 pizza chains Pizza Hut has got the best crust- their pan pizzas are crinkly and crunchy when straight out of the oven and has got the best taste- their sauce is just so-so and when I actually order their bacon pizzas I tell them not to put any sauce on it, tastes better without it on that topping. Dominos when I tasted it was pretty much cardboard and Papa John's is by far the worst: like mashed up Wonder Bread- absolutely bland to the point where it even overwhelms the generic tasteless toppings on it so I have to munch on the pickled peppers just to get a taste of anything. Eck.

Too bad they can't read this.

LOL Well the Papa John's branch which was very near my house closed down because people stopped going there so there may be some hope for humanity yet.

I would do the same if I didnt have an addiction to pizza but sadly its like a drug for me. :(

I'd make my own. lol

I gave this thread a good thinking last night. the question it poses:

"How to fix Pizza Hut"

is answered simply:

Burn it to the ground.

I tried Pizza Hut once while abroad. Was not as good as what we make em home.

Are Dominoes any better?

"Mom and pop" does not automatically equal good. Sometimes, sure, but also sometimes it's utter crap and makes even PH taste good. Relatively, of course.

I think you're right Papa johns just came out with a frito-pie pizza.

Shakey's chicken was awesome.

Here's my advise to PH... get rid of Blake Shelton.
We use to frequent a privately owned pizza joint in Waco TX back in the 70s that had a deep dish Texas shaped pizza. ( I liked the panhandle) and these long, tall beer glasses that had a wooden stand they set in. Some of the best pizza I'd ever had.

Today I like as little crust a possible with premium ingredients. Never saw those beer glasses again.

I make a mean Ginger Honey Sriracha salad dressing. Its good, really.
The best Pizzas are very simple, without all the goop and gunk and grease. Go back to the origin and rethink that concept. Good crust, the right oven, few choice toppings, voila.

Pan crust is probably the one thing PH does exceptionally well.

So... went to Papa Murphy's last night. We get their pizzas about once every couple months, on average. Got a large (actually a medium, but marketing ya know) stuffed pizza. Now, it's been about two months since I last went there, but there prices jumped, and I mean jumped dramatically. Another customer and I were talking about it while waiting. He thought it was his imagination, as did I, and we concluded it wasn't our imaginations. Anyway, what used to be a $12 pizza is now a $15 pizza. Had I gotten a family size (read: large) it would have been $18. Other prices are similar as well.

I think their stuff is decent. Not "Wow!!!", but decent. The primary appeal is... or was... price. Well, now that appeal is gone. I can get similar pizzas, already cooked, for the same or just a dollar or two more. Papa Murphy's has moved into the "Meh, just another pizza place" category, only with them I still get to do some of the work, too. Yay!

All corporate pizza suck. Buy from family owned restaurants only. They have to make better food or go out of business so they insist on pride and good food. Would you rather eat a burger off the outdoor grill or the WMDs served at Jack in the Box or McDonalds?

Have to stand up for dominos here since I know better. Both the dough and the sauce are made fresh every day, unlike PH and the other chains. And anyone who thinks it's pizza with Cajun shrimp on it, well, I take their opinion on the subject with a grain of salt.

Btw, PH's crust is premade and weeks old. Might as well be grocery store pizza.

That's a great theory, but it just doesn't wash. If quality were paramount it wouldn't matter who the place is, they'd need to serve up quality or perish. Mom-and-pops can serve up crap too, and many do, and still survive quite well.

I don't doubt you on PH's crust, but the pan crust is still good.

Is your Domino's experience before or after they changed? I think they got better overall, though their new sauce is a bit too sweet for my taste.

If I had to rate the three major delivery chains it would be 1) Domino's, 2) Pizza Hut, and 3) Papa John's (dead last, I detest their pizza).

Well before, back in the 80s when the 30 minute guarantee was still going. And if you saw how PH and Dominos clean, or don't, those pans you'd not be a fan of pan pizza.

Some restaurants are better than others, of course, and some do deserve to be shut down, but I'm a veteran of a great deal of restaurant experience and I also know that many people get all skeeved over cleanliness and the doings inside when most restaurants are pretty much the same. Much of what we complain about, or think is a big deal, isn't and is commonplace in other parts of the world. We're spoiled and ignorant, really.

Generic comment. Not aimed at you specifically.

I agree, and PH and Dominos pass health inspections with flying colors. However, just because it likely won't make you sick doesn't mean that it won't put you off seeing how it's made.

Oh sure, but I've seen stuff made in my mother's and grandmother's kitchen that made me give a side-eye. Shoot, *I* make a particular casserole that makes even me cringe when I'm making it, but it comes out looking and tasting great.

I wonder how many people know that most restaurant 1000 Island Dressing is pretty much just ketchup, mayo, and relish?

Maybe it's because of my experience, but I generally don't get worked up over that kind of thing. I saw an online article about supposedly questionable fast food awhile back, and it had a picture of a frozen McRib. People were commenting how 'gross' and 'nasty' it looked. Meh, it looked to me like a frozen piece of meat. Pressed and processed, of course, but still just a frozen piece of meat.

I get that, but I've seen how those pans are cleaned and that they really aren't cleaned. New ones are a bronze color, used ones are black and you can scrap down to the original bronze color. It's not a health hazard, they are sanitized, but they're definitely not what you'd call clean.
