It takes some people forever to learn and some people never learn.
You reap what you sow and sew what you rip.

Most valuable cooking tips you learned from your mother and/or father?
From my mother...
1) When having pancakes or waffles or french toast... always heat the syrup. Makes a world of difference.
2) When having hamburger or brats or hot dogs... always toast the bun. Again, huge difference.
Now, I'm suffering from tool-envy. I have a girlfriend who makes beautiful furniture, and I am hopelessly incompetent but so admiring! Terrified of electric saws and stuff.
I cooked a turkey upside down on accident once. The breast meat was very tender and moist.I always cook my turkey upside down. It's not beautiful, but the breast cooks in a lot of butter, and I use celery, apples and onions as aromatics, so the flavor seeps through the breast as they break down. Amazing, and the breast is so tender.
I still won't use a table saw. I've seen more than one finger lost due to them, and I am intimidated by them. Otherwise, I'm pretty comfortable with most tools.
