easy apple pie.

I found this recipe, and its very easy to make, ...I wife gave me a 9 out of 10.

I made my own crust, which she stated needed to be a little more flakey...which is why I did not get a 10.

Apple Pie by Grandma Ople Recipe - Allrecipes.com

May I suggest:

- Fuji or Gala apples instead of Granny Smith
- Cinnamon - about a teaspoon in the filling, and another half teaspoon sprinkled on the top crust
- Nutmeg - about a half teaspoon in the filling, and another quarter teaspoon on the top crust
- light sprinklings (maybe 1/8 tsp at most) of allspice and clove in the filling and on the top crust
- one tbsp of *salted* butter on the bottom crust, one in the filling, and one thinly spread on the top crust
- enough brown sugar in the filling (I've never made any measurements for the ingredients of this pie) and then sprinkle maybe 1 tbsp of brown sugar on the top crust

Please don't get me wrong - I'm no chef - I'm just a hack who uses too much seasoning on everything and just happened to get this one right. But as far as actually making the crust itself, I'm clueless on that one.

The Pillsbury rolled pie crusts and other similar pie crusts are really flaky. Not the pie crusts already in a pie pan. I found this out when I was looking for store bought alternatives to making empanada dough. The rolled pie crusts were way too flaky and took away from the flavor of the empanada filling. Eventually I did find empanada disks at a Asian grocery store.

hmmm... empanadas at an Asian grocery.....

As much as I like to cook I suck at pastries for some reason. So even if this is a super easy recipe I have no confidence in myself and will just buy a pie, thanks. ;)

Ernest the secret to a flaky pie crust is rolling it out in one direction. The back and forth movement with the rolling pin breaks down the bits of shortening too much and they are what's needed for a flaky crust.

Have you ever considered using flour tortillas in a recipe using apples and other fruits? There are a lot of recipes on the web from apple burritos, enchiladas even cobblers using tortillas. You get the same yumminess found in an apple pie only it takes less than 30 minutes from start to finish.

Thanks but I prefer to eat the classic crust of the pie as opposed to a tortilla, my favorite is French apple pie because of the sugary topping. :chew:

The Asian store may well have been a Filipino store, because empanadas (along with foods like caldereta, fish rellenos, and egg tortes) are a very common Filipino food, thanks to the 400 years that Spain kept the Philippines as a colony. A significant amount of their language is almost identical to Spanish. If you go to a Spanish restaurant in Manila, it's really a bit of a disappointment because most of the food they serve is not much different from normal Filipino fare.

But - and I'm going off on a tangent here since this is a food subject - I was really surprised to find how many foods they have that are identical to what I grew up with in the Deep South, like boiled peanuts, mustard greens, and chitlins...though we never sold chitlins on the street - the stench is truly horrid.
