The best thing(S) I ever ate

I once went an entire week without eating anything - anything at all. The first thing I ate after that was a cucumber sandwich. It was the best thing I've ever eaten. Got sick about twenty minutes later. Then I ate another one - the second best thing I've ever eaten.

1) Bahama breeze has gone so far downhill over the years it is ridiculous. I went last summer and it flat out sucked compared to what it once was.

2) Pollo tropical has been around here for years. It is not bad, but it is rather "generic"

I live in Florida so I do have a lot of the hole in the wall places. Cuban restaurants, Jamaican restaurants, the roti place I mentioned, ethnic food trucks at gas stations that are actually fairly good, empenada stands, Chilean restaurants, and so on (yeah not all of them are Caribbean).

I don't know what Bahama Breeze was thinking. When I first went there there was a 2 hour wait. Can't figure out why people want to "fix what not broken." Now its Chicken Alfredo with island seasonings in the sauce with a tropical "atmosphere."

Risky, where is "Wilson" N.C. in comparison to Raleigh?

I'm gonna have to say one of my most recent experiences is "Pervian Japanese Fusion" dinner at a place named Osaka's in Buenos Aires. Incredible food. We ordered the "Chef's Taster Choices", which they brought us food until we had to tell them to stop. We ate a little bit of everything they had to offer. All was fantastic.

Steak in Argentina is like nothing I've had anywhere else. Either you don't need a knife to cut it...or a butter knife works nicely. And that's for any cut of meat.

My grandmother's upside-down pineapple cake.

In Florence, Italy there was a small restaurant named (English translation) Small Perfections and they had the very best "Tiramisu" that I've ever had anyplace.

In Paris there was a very small neighborhood restaurant (can't remember the name), which was actually in an alley, and they had the best roast duck with potatoes, carrots, and onions that I've ever had.

In Corpus Christie, Texas there is a seafood place downtown that uses a "pecan flour" to make the batter for shrimp and oysters and both were out of sight, but I liked the oysters just a bit more than the shrimp.

And some of the best chinese (various dishes) I've had...even better than NYC or SF is in north Austin. It's called "First Chinese BBQ".

I am the same way about blue gill perch or crappie, because trout is pretty rare around here. There is something about catching your food and cooking it on the spot that is satisfying.

I live on river that has filet size blue gill. They are tasty. But I like the little one's too. Scale'm, gut'em...drop'em in the grease and cook till the bones get crispy. And eat'em whole.

But my all-time favorite fresh water fish is "crappie". In Texas we pronounce it "Croppie". Just can't beat those fish.

Yeah, I am in Tx too, and croppie is the way I pronounce it. I was just using the common spelling. In Louisiana, they call them sac-a-lait, which means sack or bag of milk. Imo, it is the best freshwater fish there is.

It's about 60 miles east of Raleigh. People from Raleigh sometimes drive to Wilson to eat BBQ.

I think those tiny little down in an alley restaurants are always better than the big ones or so it seems to me.

Seems like on two successive trips to France no matter what I order I got duck. I used to like duck, but now - **** duck! I had duck cooked every way you can cook it. Duck and some kind of sweet potatoes made in different ways. My wife ordered something different and enjoyed great food, meal after meal. Me? I was trying to get another duck to go down my throat. Sweet Jesus! No matter what I ordered I got duck.

When we got to Strasbourg I'd feckin had it with duck. My French is crap, but I managed to tell every waiter, NO DUCK. Every meal, no matter what I ordered I got sauerkraut. I used to like sauerkraut. Again my wife had great food, food of the gods. I'm a little slow, but I finally solved the problem by ordering whatever she ordered. Now before we go to France I bone up on my restaurant French.

That sounds awesome. I gotta try that if I'm ever in Corpus Christie.

smelt,+fried.jpgA lot of the food my mom liked when I was a kid was too exotic for my taste: Soft boiled eggs, cattle tongue, rhubarb stew, calf brains and tripe are the kinds of dishes my mother cooked when she wanted to treat herself. Maybe those are just the one I remember because they were disturbing, maybe she just wanted something different. There is one thing that was a treat that I really liked: fired smelt. Smelt are these fish tank sized fish she'd fry up and were finger food the size of French fries.

A premium, jumbo lump crab cake, tender broiled lobster tail, and grilled jumbo shrimp brushed with garlic scampi butter.
I always get it with the asparagus.

Delicious. We actually went to Ruby Tuesday's not this past Valentine's Day but the one before. Our regular special occasion restaurant had a new chef who didn't know how to cook anything that wasn't fried. We had to find something else, and I've always liked Ruby Tuesday's so we went in and that's exactly what I got (including the asparagus!). You know, they made a better lobster than Red Lobster? I'd been in Red Lobster a few weeks previously, and had to send my lobster back twice. It was so hard and overcooked that I had to cut it with a serrated knife.

I was told by my local Ruby Tuesday's, when we went there about a month ago for lunch, that they didn't serve asparagus anymore. :( I asked why, and they said it was because it was a menu favorite and they kept running out of it, so they just took it off the menu. I guess instead of planning better, and buying more, they just took it away completely.

You have good taste Superfly... I gotta have it about once a month.

Let's see...

1) Roasted chicken on a spit. I was traveling many years ago in SE Asia and I think it was either Vietnam or the Philippines but some locals just stuck a whole chicken on a bamboo spit and put it on an open fire in front of us. I think they put some butter and lemongrass on it and the aroma just seeped into the chicken. Just incredible.

2) Onion rings at a burger joint near my high school. They simply served the best damned onion rings ever, I used to spend my meager allowance just by going there and ordering the rings. Their breading was crispy to the point where it crunched like a potato chip but you could still taste the onion inside of it.

3) Steak at Peter Luger's in NYC. Came to the table pre-sliced and just dripping with fat. Soft, meaty, smoky flavor- best steak I ever ate hands down.

4) Peking Duck at a restaurant in Hong Kong near the ferry terminal. Peking Duck. Nothing else needs to be said. Liked it so much that I once ordered it when I was just by myself. Couldnt finish it though.

Thats all I could remember for now.

There was a burger join near my high school, too - made the best burgers, like ever. Huge, ginormous burgers, and they charged $2 each. It was hard for a single person to finish one burger. It was probably 8" in diameter. I didn't know they made buns that big.

Agreed. And that's how we pronounce it up north here too.

Crappie is my favorite fish too.

Just 2 or 3 weeks ago my sweetie and I went crappie fishing on some property I own in rural SW Michigan where there is two big fishing ponds.

We got there about an hour and a half before sunrise because I thought I was going to have to plow a lot of snow. But much to my surprise there was a path back to the pond already plowed. And a huge section of the pond was plowed too. And there were already a bunch of holes drilled in the ice right where my eldest daughter and I put crappie beds last summer.

My daughter and son-in-law must have been out there and did all that work. How convenient. :)

My fiancee was sleeping in the back of the van and I decided to wake her up so she could get dressed. I nudged her a few times, "Wake up honey". But she protested. So then I barreled the van out onto the pond and started doing donuts. That woke her up.

We caught about 80 crappie in under two hours. And it was the first time in her life that she's ever been fishing. And she said she didn't think she would like fishing because it would be too boring, but she would try it. :rofl

She LOVES fishing now!

Great story. Thanks for sharing. My wife loves it, too.
