In Sweet Breakthrough, Scientists Led By Makers of M&Ms Sequence the Chocolate Genome

Updated: In a monumental step for chocolate lovers — ah, let's be honest, the whole of humankind — scientists announced today they have completed a preliminary genome sequence for the cacao tree.

"Although it may not benefit the bottom line in the short term, in the long run, it will ensure mutually beneficial results for the company, cocoa farmers and tree crop production in key regions of the world," he said.

Genome sequencing takes plant breeding and cultivation to a new level. Armed with information about a plant's genetic code, scientists can more easily search for genes that produce desirable traits for boosting yields and disease resistance. And, of course, ensuring genetically engineered chocolatey awesomeness.

Fungal resistance is a key issue in cocoa production, for instance — fungal diseases have cost the cocoa industry $700 million a year for the past 15 years. Brazil was the world's second largest cocoa country, producing over 400,000 tons per year, until a fungus infected almost all of its crops. Now, 70 percent of the world's cocoa comes from Africa, and Ivory Coast is the world's biggest producer.

Researchers want to guard against further losses (if not chocolate hoarders) by identifying genes that confer disease resistance. It would also be nice to know which genes control traits like yield and flavor.....snip~

Chocolate Black Hole Chocolate consumption is increasing faster than production, meaning the future will probably be less chocolaty.

Savor that leftover Halloween candy, because in the future, you won't be able to afford it. Chocolate consumption is increasing faster than cocoa production, according to the Cocoa Research Association, and that means prohibitively expensive chocolate is in our future.

Since even before Choc Finger started hoarding it, cocoa prices have been on the rise, doubling in the past six years. The cacao plant can only be grown in latitudes within 10 degrees of the equator, but cacao farmers (largely in developing nations) lack incentives to re-plant their trees as they die off, according to a report in the Independent.

Competing efforts at chocolate giants Hershey and Mars Inc. have sequenced the cacao genome, which could improve efforts to breed more resilient, higher-yielding trees. But better chocolate plants will still have to compete for acreage with engineered corn, soybeans and even palm oil, which are used for biofuel as well as food. Those plants could help farmers reap greater rewards, according to Tony Lass, chairman of the Cocoa Research Association and a former Cadbury's trader.

The result will be $11 chocolate bars. John Mason, executive director and founder of the Ghana-based Nature Conservation Research Council, says in 20 years, chocolate will be like caviar: "It will become so rare and so expensive that the average Joe just won't be able to afford it."

The chocolate market is already trending toward higher prices; all the growth in the $5.8 billion industry is in premium chocolates, the Independent says.....snip~

Godiva chocolates, founded in Belgium, have been the benchmark for excellence for years. We have many great candy makers in the US, though, and I haven't found one I don't like! Russell Stover, Harry London, Fannie Mae, Whitmans and others do keep us chocolate junkies well satisfied! Yum! I was fortunate in receiving several boxes of chocolate this Valentines Day from different people, but my neighbor next door makes fudge to die for, and she keeps me supplied year round! I love her!

Greetings, MMC. :2wave:

How 'bout Ethel M's... ever had the liquor filled chocolates she makes? Only candy I know that'll give ya a buzz.

Plus I luv the story of how she split from the Mars family to start her own biz. Chocolate drama!

Well now I see the problem, SMW! Not only do they not sell them here, Ohio is not on the list that allows shipment! Neither is Texas, where I could use my daughter's address, then have her forward them to me! It figures! Not only do I have to accept months of constant snow and ice, I have no means to alleviate my misery! Why, oh Why, am I being treated so callously by my own State! ...
