I'm experiencing some pretty bad soreness after any particularly strenuous exercise or labor, particularly lifting and pick-up basketball. Anyone know of any brand names or specific supports I should look for?

Back supports are a band aid. Look at developing your core abdominal muscles.

Been there with supports........................... and it isn't worth it.

I have a long history of back pain, but I've found that I can virtually eliminate it simply by staying away from the activities that cause it.

I do weight training, but I substitute leg presses for squats, and I never deadlift. I also tend to stay away from stand up curls and concentrate on preacher curls. that way I minimize the pressure on my back.

Basketball is high impact, it's possible (although I'm not certain at all) that the OP needs to give up basketball and do something that isn't as high impact.

i get a back injury every few years, usually from something mundane like getting out of the car wrong even though i exercise like crazy. the past two have been caused by swinging a golf club incorrectly. the latest one happened yesterday, so i'm currently hurtin' for certain. i should wear a back brace more often, but it just happens so infrequently that i get lazy about it. the injury yesterday screwed my neck up, too. not sure how that happened. anyway, i'm looking forward to not being stove up. holding off on strength training until this heals, and sticking to walking only.
