    Ouch!

I was doing my first lifting exercise tonight with 12 lb dumbells and I got this stinging, burning pain in my upper back - like a really bad bee sting. It shocked me enough to make me immediately put down my dumbells and see if an insect actually had stung me. Nothing. I finished my workout and then lifted a heavy box. Bee sting pain again. Ouchie! Anyone know what I should do? Heating pad? Ice pack?
I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. -- Benjamin Franklin

I'd start out by getting other people to carry stuff.

Hey! That'd probably be a great way to meet guys too!

Seriously, a stinging pain is kind of weird. Are you sure you didn't have something sharp stuck in your clothes or in your back?

    Sounds like a pinched nerve.
    I get them fairly regularly.
Usually, I avoid the lift, which precipitated the pain, for a few days.

    Re: Ouch!

You've damaged a nerve/muscle, wait a few days or more before you lift again. To prevent future pains like this, warm up for 10 minutes before lifting your full weights. Just be glad that this didn't occur while you were lifting 200lbs, as it was with me :P
Congratulations, you've proved yourself to be insane.

    Yikes....that's real iron.
Usually my twinges occur while doing lighter weight shoulder exercises.
Don't get me started on my elbow and wrist problems.

The general rule of thumb for sprains and pulled muscles is cold packs for the first 24 hours, then heat.

It was during a pull up exercise, I have a 200lb resistance setup to where I can pull down on a tied up bar that simulates a pull-up. Compared to my 130lb body weight, it's quite a bit. Pulled several muscles in my back and a few small places in the traps area. Couldn't work any for almost a week, but I enjoyed the excuse :P

It might not have anything to do with you workout.

Have you been in any physically traumatic situations (got in a fight, fell off your bike, car accident, etc, etc) lately?

In addition to taking it easy, I suggest an anti-inflammatory (non-prescription) for 2-3 days. Tylenol, Aleve, etc

That's assuming you don't have some other condition that can be worsened by those pills.
