Native Americans are entitled to free and subsidized medical care at some federally-funded health clinics, but 'Obamacare' will soon force many of them to buy insurance or else face hefty fines if they are not “Indian enough”.

“A lot of folks are going to get stuck with the bill,” Jay Stiener of the National Council of Urban Indian Health told the Associated Press.

Members of federally-recognized American Indian tribes have received government-funded health services since 1787. Throughout the US, there are 33 hospitals and 59 health centers that provide services including prenatal care, baby well-checks, dentistry and eye glasses to Native Americans.

The US government has treaty obligations to care for the well-being of Native Americans, but may soon abandon many of its legal responsibilities. President Obama’s health care reform will force thousands of Native Americans to purchase their own health insurance or pay a minimum fine of $695 to the Internal Revenue Service. Indian health advocacy groups estimate up to 480,000 people will be affected, AP reports.

“I’m no less Indian than I was yesterday, and just because the definition of who is Indian got changed in the law doesn’t mean that it’s fair for people to be penalized,” Liz DeRouen, a Native American who usually receives healthcare at a government-funded clinic in North Carolina, told AP. “If I suddenly have to pay for my own health insurance to avoid the fine, I won’t be able to afford it.”

DeRouen is a former tribal administrator for the Dry Creek Rancheria Band of Pomo Indians, but she lost her membership due to an argument with other members. But even though she lost documentation as a tribe member, she is still genetically considered a Native American.

The Obama administration currently has no solution to the hardships the Affordable Care Act will inflict upon the Native American population, but the IRS and the US Treasury have jointly scheduled a public hearing forMay 29to discuss establishment of who qualifies for the exemption from the insurance coverage requirement.

Nearly 30 percent of all Native Americans live below the poverty line, and forcing them to pay fines or purchase insurance would likely just increase this number.

There’s still no such thing as a free lunch, but would you settle for a flu shot with a price tag of $0.00, or gratis medication to help you stop smoking? Those freebies—and others—will be coming your way, regardless of what health insurance plan you choose for coverage starting in January 2014, when some of the biggest changes under the Affordable Care Act (ACA, or Obamacare) kick in.

Specifically, the ACA details certain preventive services that are included at no extra cost to all Americans (that means no co-pay, either). That’s a certainty for any plan bought through the insurance marketplaces that will open in every state by October 1, 2013. Even if you buy the lowest-cost plan—the one that only kicks in if you have some sort of medical catastrophe—you’ll still get these freebies. Have insurance through your job? Many employer-based plans now offer these services at no cost for members as well.

Under Obamacare, women also get a free checkup each year, in addition to some free screenings and tests. Men do have to pay for a visit, but guys will get some of the screenings and vaccines for free. In some cases—such as with a flu shot—you may have to lay out the cash and then be reimbursed by your insurer. That’s likely to happen if you get your shot at a chain pharmacy instead of the doctor’s office. But some of those chains also offer their own discounts—around 10 to 20 percent off whatever you buy—for people who roll up their sleeves for the shot in the stores at the same time.

Here are nine tests, screenings, and treatments all adults will soon be able to get for exactly no moolah:

• Blood pressure screening

• Depression screening

• Obesity counseling and screening

• STD (sexually transmitted disease) prevention counseling for adults at increased risk

• Smoking-cessation interventions, including counseling and medication

• Some vaccines (some are included if you missed your teenage booster) including: an annual flu shot; human papillomavirus (HPV, which can protect against certain cancers); measles/mumps/Rubella (MMR); a vaccine against a type of meningitis; chicken pox; and tetanus/diphtheria/pertussis, or whooping cough, which has made a comeback in some states

• Birth control for women (under most plans; doesn’t include all brands, though)

• Breastfeeding counseling and supplies

• Domestic violence screening and counseling.....snip~

9 Freebies You
Hospitals across the nation -- even those located just miles apart -- charge wildly different rates for the same medical procedure. A data set released for the first time by the Department of Health and Human Services illustrates just how dramatic the price gaps can be.

The database, released Wednesday, is based on bills submitted by more than 3,000 U.S. hospitals nationwide for Medicare patients they treated. It covers the 100 most common in-patient procedures for those patients.

Encompassing more than 163,000 separate records, the data set will be a gold mine for researchers analyzing the often inscrutable field of health care pricing. Through standardized diagnostic codes, it allows comparisons for similar services provided by different hospitals.

For example, the average bill for treatment for a heart attack without major complications at a hospital in Danville, Ark., was $3,334. Across the country in Modesto, Calif., the same diagnosis incurred an average bill of $92,057.

Even within the same region, costs can run to opposite extremes. HHS pointed out that the bills submitted for treating a heart failure with some complications ranges from a low of $21,000 to a high of $46,000 in Denver, Colo., and from a low of $9,000 to a high of $51,000 in Jackson, Mississippi.

Name any other good or service in the country that someone would pay one amount for in one state and thirty times that amount for the same thing in another state.

The problem with health care is that there are no cost controls. The problem with health insurance is that there are no cost controls in health care, and insurance covers/pays for too many things.

Who dares to disagree with that?

U.S. President Barack Obama gestures....

Healthcare reform should be the signature Democratic achievement of President Barack Obama's presidency.

But with "Obamacare" five months from show time, Democrats are worried about whether enough Americans will sign up to make the sweeping healthcare overhaul a success - and what failure might mean for Congress heading into the 2016 presidential race.

Some of the law's main advocates fear that not enough of America's 49 million uninsured will know about health coverage offered in their own states. Even if they do, new insurance plans may not be attractive to young, healthy consumers needed to offset an expected influx of older and sicker patients.

Only a handful of states are beginning campaigns to promote the online health insurance marketplaces created by the law. Known as exchanges, the markets will offer private coverage at federally subsidized rates to individuals and families with low-to-moderate incomes, with enrollment set to begin October 1.

The federal government has kept quiet about its promotion plans, which are expected to begin in earnest over the summer.

Some Democrats are frustrated about the lack of details surrounding administration plans to promote the exchanges.

Reform is facing challenges on several fronts. Big insurers appear wary of participating, raising questions about how competitive the exchanges will be. Businesses are mounting a new legal effort to stop the use of federal subsidies in exchanges run by Washington. And most states have balked at the exchanges and the Medicaid expansion.

"I don't see how what they're planning to do is going to be adequate. The resources are too limited, the (law's) penalties are too weak and elite opposition in much of the country will undermine" enrollment, said Paul Starr, a Princeton professor and former health adviser to President Bill Clinton.

Add to that the challenge of reaching a public that is highly skeptical and often misinformed about the most complex social legislation since Medicare and Medicaid in the mid-1960s.

A Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that 77 percent of Americans know little or nothing about exchanges, while 40 percent erroneously think reforms create a government panel to make end-of-life decisions for people on Medicare.

An April survey of 1,003 people by HealthPocket, an online company that helps consumers find insurance, also found that the law's penalty for not buying coverage would not induce most 25-to-34-year-olds or 18-to-24-year-olds to purchase it.....snip~
Obamacare is on the horizon, but will enough people sign up?

Seems Obamacare just keeps on coming up with more and more problems. Now even the Democrats are having a hard time with Obamacare. All that not knowing in the details is all coming out. Now Obama is in desperation mode to get the Insurance companies to not raise those premiums. To Late they already started.

They know they cannot get the younger generations to pay in and make up the difference. Plus now they know that the majority wont care about the fine nor will even pay the fine.

Now is the time for All 30 Republican States to come together and stand together.....one thing is for certain. This will be part of the Mid-term Election. Make no mistake about it.....and all the while this Obamacare will continue to keep getting taken apart piece by every damn piece. Republicans need to go on the attack over this. Also with all that additional costs they keep finding.....hidden in all those details. Pointing out each and everytime Obama lied and falsified information to the people on his Ponzi Scheme.

Looks at his lame azz now.....talking about how it will work. IF they can get the private sector to work with the Fed. I can see his supporters doing so but that's about it.

SCHUMER: It’s in part because of Obamacare, but healthcare costs have been going up in double digits for years and years.

The first part of his answer is all about coercive government price controls. In short, Obamacare places all sorts of costly mandates on private insurers. To comply with said mandates, insurers raise premiums in order to stay in business. Then "insurance departments" step in and veto the hikes, in order to "protect families." Lawsuits, disruptions, and an exodus from the market ensues. If liberals are intent on driving private insurance into the grave -- and they are -- this is how they'll do it.

The second statement Schumer makes is a straight-up bogus excuse. Sure, Obamacare plays a role in this, but "costs have been going up in double digits for years and years." It's absolutely true that healthcare costs have risen steadily for quite some time. But it's also true that Obamacare was ostensibly passed to reverse this trend. Not slow it. Not curb it. Reverse it, by $2,500 per family. Now Democrat after Democrat after Democrat is acknowledging what virtually every analysis has projected: The law won't contain costs as promised.....snip~

It doesn't get any better than this.....the Ghoul of the Senate Admitted Obamacare was causing Costs to go up. Later this evening Schumer has walked back that comment and now moved the goal-post stating that Obamacare was suppose to slow the growth and rise of healthcare costs, while improving the quality of care. Just where did he come up with this notion. When he knew none had read the Bill from the get go.

And it appears as if many legislators—including some Democrats—are dismayed by the requirement.

“Secret talks” are underway between both parties in Congress to do away with this requirement, according to Politico. Proposals have been submitted to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which manages congressional staffer benefit options. According to Politico's story, “One proposal exempts lawmakers and aides; the other exempts aides alone.”

Medicaid is the nation's health care system for the poor. It's funded jointly by the federal government and the states. Medicaid is either the first- or second-largest budget item in all 50 states and the program is slated for a massive expansion under President Obama's health-care reform law. Despite the program's huge and growing overall cost, reimbursements to medical providers are so low that many practices refuse to accept Medicaid patients, causing long waiting periods for treatment.
Mapping out how an Alzheimer’s gene works could lead to new treatments.

So far, nearly two dozen genes scattered across four chromosomes have been linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease. But identifying such genetic risk factors doesn’t mean that researchers fully understand how they contribute to the cognitive decline and dementia symptoms related to the condition. And that understanding is often crucial to turning genetic information into effective treatments

Millions of deaths happen each year from vaccine-preventable diseases because vaccines break down from heat and developing countries often lack ways to properly refrigerate them. Now researchers suggest eggshell-like coatings can make vaccines more thermally stable.

The talks — which involve Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), the Obama administration and other top lawmakers — are extraordinarily sensitive, with both sides acutely aware of the potential for political fallout from giving carve-outs from the hugely controversial law to 535 lawmakers and thousands of their aides.
The project would get more than $100 million in the proposed 2014 federal budget Obama plans to submit to Congress.

Obama combined science and the economy in his announcement, describing the proposed brain mapping project as the kind of government program that can generate jobs — and yet is at risk because of the federal budget sequester.
"We can't afford to miss these opportunities while the rest of the world races ahead," Obama said. "There is this tremendous mystery that is waiting to be unlocked."
In announcing the project, Obama added a call for increased support of federal research and argued against sequestration — an ongoing series of $85 billion in automatic, across-the-board budget cuts.

In its first year, $50 million of funding would come from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which pays for prosthetic research aimed at helping paralyzed soldiers. And roughly $40 million would be added to the $5.5 billion that the National Institutes of Health annually spends on neuroscience research already, according to Collins. A final $20 million would be research funds provided by the National Science Foundation for the effort.

"It's a tough time politically to take on an expensive, long-term project like this, but scientifically, the time is ripe, and the impacts on science and medicine could be enormous," says science budget expert Al Teich of George Washington University's Center for International Science & Technology Policy. "Neuroscience is arguably the hottest field in science these days, and we'd be foolish not to try and take advantage of the potential it offers."

However, some researchers, such as fruit-fly genetics expert Michael Eisen of the University of California-Berkeley, criticize the initiative as overly ambitious and overly centralized. "We don't even understand the fly," Eisen says. "I think there is a fundamental misreading of where innovation arises in science here. It doesn't come from centralized bureaucratic projects, but rather from individual labs.".....snip~

Obama must have forgot about the R&D that comes thru the Medical Device Tax that he and the Demos threw up. Which is the one that now quite a few of those Democrats voted on in a symbolic gesture that they oppose that tax.

What happened didn't Obama include that in his Obamacare.....or was he looking to scam some more money? Thoughts?
